Observing Anger & PessimismWithout Becoming Them

When anger and pessimism arise, the decisive shift is learning to observe them as expressions of the pain body—energetic patterns moving through your consciousness—rather than identifying with them as personal truth or reality. By recognizing that angry or pessimistic thoughts are reflections of the anger's energy field and not factual statements, you create distance between awareness itself and the emotions. This witnessing capacity, even in brief 2–5 second windows before emotions fully overtake you, allows change to happen naturally without suppression or struggle. Anger and resistance then become spiritual practice rather than obstacles.

What Is the Decisive Shift Between Feeling Anger and Being Anger?

The core teaching centers on a fundamental distinction: the difference between having anger in your energy field and being the anger. Most people are completely identified with their emotional states. When anger arises, they believe the angry thoughts and act from that identity. But there is another way to relate to emotions entirely.

As described in the teaching, the shift happens when you step into the role of witness or observer. You recognize that anger is moving through you—an energetic pattern in your body and energy field—but it is not who you are. The witness is the awareness that can say "there is anger here" in the same way you might say "my heart is beating" or "I feel nervous energy." The witness acknowledges the sensation without fusion. It allows everything to be as it is, without judgment or the need to change it immediately.

This distinction is profound because it immediately creates space. Once you are no longer completely identified with the emotion, you are no longer completely controlled by it. The anger may still flow through your body; the thoughts may still arise. But you are not the anger. You are the awareness that observes it. And that awareness is the beginning of freedom.

How Do Angry Thoughts Form From the Energy of Anger?

A key insight in the teaching is that anger does not just create a feeling—it actively generates specific thought patterns. When the energy field of anger flows into your mind, the thoughts that emerge are reflections of that energy. The anger makes you think certain kinds of thoughts.

In the example given, when someone feels overwhelmed by anger, the anger generates thoughts like "all that spiritual stuff obviously doesn't work" or "whatever I do, it's going to be the same" or "there's no point in trying." These are not neutral observations about reality. These are thoughts born from the anger's energy field, and they carry the distortion of that energy. They are thought forms, not truths.

This is critical: if a thought comes from anger, it is not reliable. It is a distortion. The mind under the influence of anger will misinterpret situations, exaggerate problems, and convince you of things that are not true in your calmer, more conscious moments. Recognizing this stops you from blindly believing every thought that arises. You don't have to act on pessimistic thoughts about powerlessness just because they appear. You can observe them as products of an energy pattern.

What Is the Pain Body and How Does It Drive Anger?

The teaching introduces the concept of the pain body—old accumulated emotional pain that lives in your body as an energetic pattern. This pain body can lie dormant or it can rise into your mind and control your thoughts. When it activates, it becomes angry. And when the angry pain body rises into your awareness, it brings its characteristic thought forms with it.

The pain body is not something you created in this moment. It may be old anger that has lived in you for a long time, accumulated from past experiences, conditioning, or the collective human condition. Understanding this is liberating because it means the anger that suddenly overwhelms you is not necessarily a personal failing or a reflection of your true nature. It is an expression of an energetic pattern that is passing through you.

When you recognize anger as "pain body" rather than truth, the emotion loses some of its grip on your sense of self. You are not bad for having it. You are not broken. The pain body is simply alive in you, like weather moving through the sky.

Can You Actually Catch Emotions Before They Fully Take Over?

One of the most practical aspects of the teaching concerns timing. Anger is described as an explosive energy that can escalate rapidly. But there is a window—very brief, perhaps only 2 to 5 seconds—where you can catch the anger in its earliest stirrings before it becomes fully blown.

If you can be present in that early moment, you have an opportunity. You feel the first sensation of anger rising. You recognize it. "Oh, it's coming. There it is. That's the pain body." If you can stay there with your awareness, witnessing the sensation without suppressing it, something different may happen. The anger may still grow, or it may not. But the key is that you have broken the automatic identification. You are no longer swept into the emotion unconsciously.

This requires presence—what the teaching calls "Presence Power." The more presence already available in your consciousness, the more likely you can catch the anger early. And catching it early means you have space to choose your response rather than reacting blindly from the emotion.

Even if you miss the early window and the anger fully takes hold, the practice continues. When the emotion subsides, you can recognize "oh, there it was, and I wasn't present." Then, the next time it arises, you may be present earlier. Over time, through repeated practice, your capacity to catch emotions in their early stages grows.

What Does It Mean to Witness Without Suppression?

An important clarification: witnessing the anger is not the same as suppressing it. Suppression means pushing the emotion down, denying it, or trying to make it go away through force of will. Witnessing means something different entirely.

To witness is to be aware of the energy, to feel it, to acknowledge it fully—but without becoming identified with it. You feel the anger in your body. You notice the thoughts. You allow it all to be there. But you are not the anger; you are the awareness that sees it. There is a subtle but enormous difference.

When you suppress, you create resistance, and resistance often strengthens what you're trying to resist. When you witness, you allow the energy to move and transform. The teaching suggests that awareness itself is the agent of change. You don't have to do anything. You don't have to fix the anger or control it or change yourself. The more awareness comes in, the more the old patterns change naturally.

How Does the Universal Human Condition of "Something Is Wrong" Trigger Action?

The teaching identifies a universal human pattern: the feeling that something is wrong. This feeling lives inside most humans and is part of the ego structure. When this feeling is present, the mind immediately begins to search: "Where is the thing that is wrong? What do I need to do about it?"

The problem is that the mind then misinterprets situations. It takes the vague sense that something is wrong and projects it onto circumstances, relationships, or the body. A raised heartbeat during public speaking, for example, can trigger the thought "something is wrong with me" or "there's a problem." But the heartbeat is a natural response to the situation. There is no real problem to solve.

This misinterpretation then drives unnecessary action—attempts to control, fix, or change situations that don't actually need changing. The feeling that impotence and powerlessness that follows ("whatever I do, it's not going to work anyway") is not a personal problem. It is a universal human condition. Many billions of people share this same thought pattern. Recognizing this lifts the shame and personal blame.

Why Should You Be Grateful for Anger as Spiritual Practice?

The teaching offers a counterintuitive suggestion: use anger as your spiritual practice. See the anger not as an obstacle to your spiritual growth but as an opportunity for deepening awareness.

Every time anger arises, you have a chance to practice witnessing. Every time you fail—when anger takes over and you lose presence—the next moment offers a chance to start again. The anger will immediately generate thoughts that say "you see, you failed again, you can't do it, there's something wrong with you." But these are just more angry thoughts, not truth. You can recognize them as such and continue practicing.

The teaching suggests that the greatest obstacles in your life can become your greatest opportunities for spiritual awakening if you approach them with awareness rather than resistance. Anger, because it is so powerful and so frequent for many people, is a constant opportunity to deepen your witnessing capacity. Over time, this practice transforms your entire relationship with difficult emotions and your sense of self.

What Is the Relationship Between Thought Forms and Reality?

One of the most liberating aspects of the teaching is learning to separate thought forms from reality. When awareness grows, you stop needing to believe in every thought that arises in your mind. A thought comes: "It's not going to work. You're about to fail. There's nothing you can do. You might as well give up."

But awareness recognizes this as a thought form—a pattern of thinking generated by the anger or the pain body, not a statement of fact about reality. The thought may feel true when you're in the grip of the emotion, but when you step back with awareness, you can see it as a form, a structure, a shape that the mind has taken. It is not reality itself.

This recognition creates enormous freedom. You are no longer subject to every negative prediction your mind produces. You are no longer convinced by the pessimism. You understand that your mind under the influence of anger will distort, exaggerate, and misrepresent. So you don't blindly follow its conclusions. You observe them. And in that observation, you become free.

Where to Go From Here

The primary practice outlined in the teaching is straightforward but requires consistency: bring awareness to your emotions as they arise. When anger comes, see if you can witness it. Feel the energy in your body without becoming identified with it. Notice the thoughts that arise and recognize them as reflections of the anger, not facts. If you lose presence and become identified with the anger, don't blame yourself—that's the ego's voice. Simply notice "oh, I wasn't present," and resolve to practice again the next moment.

Pay special attention to the early stages of emotion. Can you catch the first stirrings of anger, in that 2–5 second window, before it becomes fully blown? This is where the practice is most powerful. As your presence grows through practice, this window expands. Your capacity to stay aware even as emotions arise and move through you develops.

Remember that change happens through awareness, not through force or willpower. You don't have to change yourself. You don't have to suppress the emotions. You don't have to control everything. The simple act of witnessing—of being aware of what is happening in your energy field and your mind—is enough. As awareness grows, the old patterns naturally transform. Use anger and resistance not as problems to solve but as invitations to deepen your practice.

[0:07] hi I I often feel um overwhelmed by

[0:11] anger uhhuh so I um and that anger like

[0:17] uh makes me uh throw my spiritual pra

[0:21] practice really out of the window so

[0:24] um it's like a big uh impotence that I

[0:28] feel and pessimism so so it's it's not

[0:31] going to work anyway so just yes the

[0:34] hell with

[0:36] it and

[0:38] um that's one thing and the other thing

[0:41] is um I also feel very often that

[0:44] something is wrong so I need to take

[0:47] some action yes to correct something

[0:50] that know probably is just imaginary so

[0:53] it's unreal yeah so there is no action

[0:55] needed most probably but I I have to to

[0:58] do something about it yes so uh and I

[1:02] get carried away by that yes yes

[1:06] um yeah for fact for example right now I

[1:09] feel my heartbeat very strongly yes um

[1:13] and I guess there's no reason for that

[1:16] but well you're you're doing public

[1:19] speaking right now so maybe that's why

[1:23] yeah and that's fine you just you

[1:25] acknowledge that the heart is beating

[1:27] and you let that be and what the the

[1:31] feeling that something is wrong that's

[1:33] not a personal problem of yours it's a

[1:36] universal human condition that to carry

[1:39] that feeling inside that something is

[1:42] wrong and then the Mind looks looks for

[1:47] what can I do about this or where is it

[1:50] where is the thing that's wrong and then

[1:51] it misinterprets

[1:53] situations uh

[1:56] so

[1:58] anger when Ang comes of course the

[2:01] energy field of it immediately flows

[2:04] into your mind and the thoughts that you

[2:06] then think are reflections of the anger

[2:10] the anger makes you think certain

[2:13] thoughts and as you put it this your it

[2:15] says all that spiritual stuff obviously

[2:18] doesn't work yeah this these are

[2:20] thoughts that come out of the anger the

[2:23] energy field yes or whatever I do it's

[2:26] going to be always the same and you know

[2:29] no point of it because going to work so

[2:31] yes that's the kind of thoughts that it

[2:34] generates yes but next time it happens

[2:39] see if you are able

[2:41] to in addition to thinking those

[2:45] thoughts well at the same time you can

[2:49] be aware that these are thoughts that

[2:51] have Arisen out of the energy field of

[2:55] anger in other words see if you can have

[2:58] an awareness it's it's not easy with

[3:01] anger because it comes so

[3:03] suddenly whether you can have an

[3:05] awareness not only that there's the

[3:07] energy of anger flowing through you but

[3:11] also perhaps that the energy of anger

[3:13] which may be old anger that has lived in

[3:16] you for a long time pain body I call it

[3:21] which can easily then rise into your

[3:23] mind and control your

[3:26] thoughts are you able to be a stay aware

[3:29] while it happens Happ s and recognize

[3:31] anger as an expression of the pain

[3:35] body and if you're thinking angry

[3:38] thoughts to realize that these are the

[3:42] thoughts of anger anger is thinking

[3:45] these thoughts they are not true so they

[3:49] are simply thoughts that reflect the

[3:51] energy field of anger so they the

[3:54] experiment then

[3:56] is whether you can stay aware as the

[3:59] observe or the

[4:02] witness of those thoughts and of the

[4:05] energy field of

[4:07] anger uh you may not I'm just suggesting

[4:10] it as an experiment whether or not

[4:13] you're able to stay present depends on

[4:17] how much presence there is already in

[4:20] you how much Presence Power there is

[4:22] already in you perhaps after having

[4:26] spent some time here with us there may

[4:29] be more Presence Power in you because

[4:32] this energy field is helpful for drawing

[4:34] that out of

[4:36] you once you are there as the witness

[4:40] then changes begin to happen you don't

[4:42] even have to do anything do you you know

[4:45] what I mean by witness is simply to

[4:47] witness to to be aware of the energy so

[4:50] that you don't become completely

[4:53] identified with

[4:55] it so the witnessing Consciousness is in

[4:58] the same way that you now Witness

[5:00] perhaps a certain nervousness your heart

[5:02] is

[5:03] beating there may be a certain

[5:05] nervousness as you stand there and you

[5:08] you witness there's the nervousness and

[5:11] there's the heartbeating and the witness

[5:13] allows everything to be as it is but

[5:17] there's it's in a deeper a dimension in

[5:19] you from where you you can say my heart

[5:21] is beating I feel nervous energy inside

[5:26] me these are still

[5:28] verbalizations but

[5:30] be beyond the verbalization there's the

[5:32] ability to Simply see it so to

[5:35] speak and that will change all the old

[5:38] patterns the more awareness comes in the

[5:41] more the old patterns will be will

[5:43] change so you don't have to change

[5:46] yourself because that's complicated many

[5:49] people try to do that I have to change

[5:54] myself the the most powerful the real

[5:56] change comes with becoming aware of

[6:00] whatever is happening inside you so that

[6:03] the anger is no longer you the anger is

[6:08] anger and you are the awareness you know

[6:12] it you you see it you feel it there it

[6:15] is and that's see that's the decisive

[6:19] shift from being the

[6:22] anger to having the anger in your energy

[6:25] field and observing it it's a wonderful

[6:29] sh

[6:30] so use anger as your spiritual practice

[6:35] if you

[6:36] fail of course anger will immediately

[6:39] say you see you failed again you can't

[6:41] do it that's the anger speaking there's

[6:44] something wrong with you yes

[6:45] particularly that there's something

[6:47] wrong with me now I don't know if you

[6:51] you may be surprised to know that there

[6:52] are millions billions of people on the

[6:56] planet who have that same thought

[6:58] pattern there's something wrong with

[7:00] with me it's part of the human

[7:03] ego but so you bring in the

[7:06] awareness and that will change

[7:11] everything that's the only true

[7:15] key if you fail next time you the anger

[7:21] arises what happens you will become

[7:23] aware immediately after the anger has

[7:26] subsided and then oh there it was and I

[7:29] wasn't

[7:30] present and then the that the moment

[7:35] will come when you are there in the

[7:37] first if you can catch the anger the

[7:39] first moment it

[7:41] comes or if you might even see that it's

[7:44] could be the result of a thought that

[7:47] creates the anger and if you can be

[7:50] there in the first moment be before it

[7:52] becomes to fully blown anger then you

[7:55] can stay there and it might not even

[7:58] become fully blown anger if you catch it

[8:00] at the first moment you can feel the

[8:02] first stirrings of anger you may only

[8:03] have 3 seconds you may come very quickly

[8:07] anger is like an explosive energy you

[8:10] may only have two three four five

[8:12] seconds to to to bring the stay there

[8:16] with your awareness and feel it oh it's

[8:17] coming there it is that's the pain body

[8:20] the angry pain body coming and if you

[8:23] catch it in the early stage don't

[8:26] suppress it by catch it I mean

[8:30] feel it be there as a witness then you

[8:34] can stay even as it grows the witness

[8:38] grows with it it may not even grow we'll

[8:42] have to see whether it still grows into

[8:44] full-blown anger or not that doesn't

[8:47] matter and so you be thankful for your

[8:51] anger

[8:53] because the anger can be become a very

[8:56] important spiritual practice for you

[8:59] because through it

[9:00] awareness can

[9:02] grow so it's it's a sometimes strange

[9:05] for people to see you can be thankful

[9:07] for things that you think are the most

[9:10] difficult obstacles in your life but

[9:13] they

[9:14] become they can become your greatest

[9:17] opportunity for for Spiritual Awakening

[9:20] use it as part of your

[9:23] practice Yeah I think the most difficult

[9:26] thing to to deal with is um importance

[9:29] when you feel it's not going to work you

[9:31] powerlessness yes like a deep pessimism

[9:34] it's not going to work it's not you're

[9:37] about to fail you yes and you have to

[9:40] recognize that these are thought forms

[9:42] they are thoughts that arise in your

[9:45] mind and when you're aware you don't

[9:49] need to

[9:51] believe in every thought that arises you

[9:54] don't no longer and that's an enormous

[9:56] Freedom you recognize it as a thought

[9:59] that comes from anger not the truth it's

[10:03] a thought a thought form that comes from

[10:07] anger the pain body it's and and if a

[10:11] thought comes from anger it's not the

[10:12] truth it's a

[10:14] distortion recognize it and you say oh

[10:17] there's another thought form that that

[10:19] says something negative that you have

[10:21] there's nothing you can do you might as

[10:24] well give up whatever thoughts

[10:26] come recognize that it's a thought form

[10:30] do you see how important that

[10:34] is well perhaps we will meet again in a

[10:37] year time and it's always interesting to

[10:41] see

[10:42] how things have

[10:45] evolved as you practice now what

[10:48] happened to you as you bring awareness

[10:50] into the anger see what happens to it a

[10:54] year

[10:54] later that's thank you we need to finish

[11:00] now thank

[11:05] you

[11:10] wonderful

[11:13] it's just wonderful to

[11:16] see

[11:20] Consciousness evolving

[11:23] Awakening in the different human forms

[11:27] in different ways

[11:30] and that we can be thankful for

[11:32] everything especially the difficult

[11:35] parts of our life because without

[11:39] that there would be no

[11:43] Awakening it's that which creates the

[11:45] the challenges create the necessary

[11:48] energy

[11:50] for the flowering of

[11:54] Consciousness so it's not only in the

[11:57] movies where things need to go

[12:01] wrong in every

[12:05] movie if nothing goes wrong there's no

[12:07] movie The Character doesn't

[12:10] develop they remain all everybody

[12:12] Remains the

[12:14] Same in a bad movie that which goes

[12:17] wrong is resolved on some external level

[12:21] but in a good

[12:22] movie as the character

[12:26] faces his or her problems

[12:30] uh he or

[12:33] she grows changes

[12:37] develops abilities that he or she didn't

[12:40] have before and in very good movies

[12:44] there's some kind of spiritual

[12:48] realization but only because something

[12:50] went

[12:51] [Laughter]

[12:58] wrong for

When anger arises, recognize that the thoughts it generates are reflections of the anger's energy, not facts. By stepping into the witness—observing the angry thoughts without identifying with them—you create distance between awareness and the emotion. This allows you to see the thought form rather than believe it, giving you freedom to choose your response.
Rather than suppressing or acting on the emotion, practice witnessing it. Feel the energy in your body and acknowledge it fully without judgment. Try to catch it in the first 2–5 seconds before it fully takes hold. The more you observe anger as an expression of the pain body rather than identifying as the anger itself, the more naturally the pattern will change.
No. The thought 'something is wrong with me' is a universal human ego pattern shared by billions of people. When awareness recognizes pessimistic thoughts as thought forms arising from anger rather than truth, you realize they are distortions, not reality. This recognition alone lifts shame and opens freedom from the need to control everything.
Yes. Anger is like an explosive energy, but there is a brief window—typically 2–5 seconds—where you can catch it in its early stirrings. If you can bring awareness and witness the sensation without suppressing it, the anger may not escalate into full-blown overwhelm. With practice, your presence grows and this window expands.
Practice recognizing yourself as the witness or observer of your emotions rather than as the emotions themselves. Notice that you can say 'there is anger in my energy field' just as you might say 'my heart is beating.' The witness allows everything to be as it is without fusion. This shift from 'I am angry' to 'I am aware of anger' is the decisive moment that creates freedom.
Anger, though challenging, is a powerful opportunity for deepening your awareness and spiritual growth. Each time it arises, you have a chance to practice witnessing. The greatest obstacles in your life can become your greatest opportunities for awakening if you approach them with awareness rather than resistance.
