Dr. Miles Neale, PsyD, is a psychotherapist, author and teacher of Tibetan Buddhism whose work bridges contemplative wisdom with modern psychology. He is the founder of the Gradual Path, which offers private coaching and therapy, online courses, pilgrimages and service projects that bring Tibetan Buddhism together with clinical psychology.
Over the past twenty-five years he has taught meditation and contemplative psychology internationally, including at the integrative medical centers of Harvard, Columbia and Cornell universities. He is also a faculty member of Tibet House (US) and Weill Cornell Medical College. His life's work has grown from long apprenticeships with Buddhist scholars and contemplative masters, and he is regarded as a forerunner in the emerging field of contemplative psychotherapy.
Miles is the author of Return with Elixir and Gradual Awakening (Sounds True, 2018), and co-editor of Advances in Contemplative Psychotherapy (Routledge). Return with Elixir draws on the mythology of Joseph Campbell, the psychology of Carl Jung, Tibetan Buddhist alchemy and the Great Year cosmology.
The Gradual Path began in 2018, after a pilgrimage to Nepal led by the Tibetan master Geshe Tenzin Zopa, where Miles launched Gradual Awakening at Kopan Nunnery in Kathmandu. A small community formed to keep studying the lam rim, the "stages of the path," and grew into an international learning community. Miles and fellow psychologist Dr. Emily Wolf have studied with and served Geshe Tenzin Zopa for over twenty years.
His approach holds that real change unfolds gradually, through wise mentorship, rigorous study, contemplative practice and the application of old insights to everyday life. He leads pilgrimages to sacred sites in the Buddhist world, and the community's service projects let students put their altruistic aspirations into action.
Worth Knowing
Dr. Miles Neale is a psychotherapist with a doctorate in clinical psychology who has spent the last twenty-five years building a bridge between Tibetan Buddhist contemplative practice and evidence-based Western psychotherapy. He holds faculty positions at Tibet House (US) and Weill Cornell Medical College, and teaches internationally at institutions like Harvard and Columbia, bringing rigor and clinical depth to conversations about meditation that often remain vague or romanticized. What distinguishes him from the wellness-circuit meditation teachers is his dual credential: he holds long-term apprenticeships with serious Buddhist scholars and masters—particularly Geshe Tenzin Zopa—while maintaining a private practice as a Buddhist psychotherapist treating patients. His framework, called the Gradual Path, specifically maps how the classical Tibetan Buddhist training sequence (the lam rim) can unfold in a modern psychotherapeutic container. People who follow his work tend to be intellectually rigorous practitioners who distrust quick fixes and want to understand the philosophy underneath the practice, not just the calming effects.
