Unraveling "I'm Not GoodEnough" Through The Work

Byron Katie
Byron Katie
May 17, 2020
読了 約10分

Byron Katie works with a student named Brian who carries the core belief "I'm not good enough." Through questioning, she reveals that this belief stems entirely from comparing his actual self—with all its failures, efforts, and struggles—against an imagined, perfect version of someone else he admires. The comparison itself is unreal: both the image of his failure and the image of the other person's success exist only in his mind. By investigating whether these comparative thoughts are actually true, whether he can know them absolutely, and what he becomes without them, Katie demonstrates that "goodness" or sufficiency is already present in simple presence—in breathing, in being here now—and that the pursuit of being "good enough" is a futile chase rooted in false images, not reality.

Where Does the Belief "I'm Not Good Enough" Come From?

Brian identifies his one-liner—the thought he's carried "basically for most of [his] life"—as "I'm not good enough." Katie's first move is practical: she asks him to consider whether he's good enough right now, in this moment, sitting where he is. The answer, she suggests, is obvious. "This is all I'm called to do. I have no plan about what we're going to talk about. My job is to just be comfortable where I am," she says, pointing to the sufficiency of simple presence (0:41–1:12).

When Katie asks Brian where he got the impression that he wasn't good enough, he traces it to comparison. Throughout his life, he observed that his parents and family directed attention and admiration toward people who succeeded—those who had looks, brains, degrees, security. "So their lives are much better than yours," Katie reflects back (1:32–2:00). The foundational belief emerges: other people are better off, more secure, happier, less afraid, more successful—and therefore I am not good enough.

Katie then walks Brian through the logical scaffolding of this belief: "They're happier. They're more secure. They're less frightened about their future. They feel more secure" (2:20–3:20). Each statement seems to build a case. But she follows with her signature question: Is it true?

Can You Actually Know That Other People Are More Secure Than You?

This is the pivot point of The Work. Katie doesn't argue that Brian's observations are wrong or that comparison is unhealthy. Instead, she asks whether the comparative claim can be known with certainty. "Can you absolutely know that it's true [that they're happier]?" she asks. Brian answers: "No, no honey you can't" (2:48–3:00).

Katie then invites Brian to meditate on the specific comparison: to conjure the image of the person he holds as more secure, and to sit with the mental state of believing "He is more secure than I am." She describes what happens in the ego during comparison with remarkable clarity (3:20–4:20):

"Look at you the ego will show you clearly and then you'll compare. You see images of your failures, how hard you've tried and failed, fallen short. Then you see an image of that person you're holding up as so secure. Where do you feel the emotions as you sit in this very common mental state of yours?"

The genius of this moment is that Katie slows down the mechanism of comparison itself. When you believe "He is more secure than I am," you're not comparing two real people. You're comparing:

  • An image of your past failures and struggles (a movie in your head)
  • An imagined future where you remain insufficient (another movie)
  • An idealized image of the other person as secure and successful (yet another movie)

None of these images are real. "That's also fake news," Katie says of the image of the other person. "It's not a real person. You can't take them out and shake their hand. It's a movie in your head" (3:40–4:20).

What Is Actually True When You Drop the Story?

Katie's third question in The Work asks: "What happens when I believe this thought?" For Brian, the answer is clear—he feels inadequate, fearful, driven. But the fourth question is the release: "Who am I without this thought?"

She directs Brian to notice his breath, his simple physicality, his presence in the room. "Notice honey, you, you, you know, be secure, and your breath. Notice how it goes in and out. Even if you try to stop it, it insists. You'll choke. It insists. This goodness is unceasing. It's always so present. It's right under our nose. It's even our nose" (4:22–4:47).

In this passage, Katie is not saying Brian will feel better or become more confident. She's identifying an order of goodness or sufficiency that precedes the comparative mind: the goodness of breathing, of being alive, of the body's relentless generosity. This isn't earned. It isn't comparative. It simply is.

Who Are You Without the Thought of Comparison?

Katie returns to presence repeatedly: "Just doctor story. Did you feel that breath? You feel your head going up and down in that moment" (4:47–5:20). The point is to interrupt the trance of the comparison-thought and return to what's actually available right now—the proof of enoughness in sensation, in aliveness, in the fact that Brian can show up to a Zoom call and be present.

She also introduces a crucial psychological observation: Brian has internalized his father's voice. His father pushed, pushed, pushed, and Brian became a version of his father, pushing himself even now. "Who was the greatest pusher, your father or you?" Katie asks. "For me, me," Brian replies (5:42–6:20). Katie acknowledges this with a subtle nod: "So you turned out to be your father, right? Pushing, pushing, pushing. Even when they die, it doesn't matter. Dead or alive, we blame it on them. No one's left" (6:20–6:40).

The significance here is that the "I'm not good enough" belief often carries the internalized voice of a parent or authority figure. The work isn't just to examine whether the belief is true; it's to recognize that the pushing, the drive to be "good enough," is a learned pattern that Brian himself now operates, independent of his father's actual presence.

What Are the Turnarounds to This Belief?

Katie then introduces turnarounds—inverting the original statement to reveal hidden assumptions. If the original belief is "He is more secure than I am," the turnaround is: "I am more secure than he is."

When Brian tries this on, his mind resists. But Katie walks him into a crucial insight: he doesn't actually know that the other person isn't doing the same performance. "Can you know that they're not doing the same thing?" she asks. "Can you know that they're not faking an emotion? Faking an identity? Smiling while feeling terrible?" (6:40–7:00).

Brian then realizes: "I don't have as large a burden to maintain." He's been imagining the other person's life as effortless, but he's actually been sparing himself the imagined pressure. Katie extends this: "I don't know that his father isn't ten times more difficult, or the expectations for him aren't ten times higher. You have no idea. Maybe his father could care less and his mother could care less, but he saw a movie of something like television or saw another neighbor, and he is pushing him just as hard as your father did" (7:00–7:50).

The turnaround reveals that the comparison rests on invisible assumptions about the other person's ease, freedom, and security—assumptions Brian can never verify and that may be completely inverted from reality.

What Is the Cost of Living Inside Comparison?

Katie reflects back to Brian what she observes: "It's such an illusion, an addiction to compare. An addiction to compare" (7:50–8:00). The repetition is intentional. Comparison isn't a passing thought; it's an addiction—a habitual way of orienting the mind.

She then asks the existential question: "Who would you be in your lives if you didn't compare yourself, with this fallacy running in your head about how other people feel?" (8:00–8:20). This isn't rhetorical. If Brian stopped comparing himself to an imagined superior version of someone else, his entire self-concept would shift. The identity of "not good enough" would dissolve because it's constructed entirely from comparison.

Katie also addresses an important caveat: even when Brian hears someone speak their truth, as he has heard her do in this conversation, he cannot fully know their experience. "I cannot know how you feel, even when you tell me. That's yours," she says (8:20–8:50). This is humbling. It suggests that the only access to truth is through radical honesty about one's own experience, not through assumption about others.

How Does The Work Dismantle the "Not Good Enough" Narrative?

The Work operates through four questions designed to free the mind from the tyranny of a single belief:

  1. Is it true? Can you know with absolute certainty that you're not good enough?
  2. Can you know that it's absolutely true? Even more pressing: what is the source of your certainty?
  3. How do you react when you believe this thought? Brian recognizes fear, inadequacy, the drive to prove himself, the internalized pushing.
  4. Who are you without this thought? Here, Katie directs him to presence, breath, the simple fact of being alive and capable of showing up.

The turnarounds then invert the belief to reveal what else might be true: "I am more secure than he is" or "I am good enough, even now, right here." These aren't affirmations meant to be believed; they're invitations to test whether they hold as much evidence as the original thought.

Where to Go From Here

If you find yourself living inside the belief "I'm not good enough," Katie's work suggests a path forward that doesn't rely on positive thinking or self-improvement. Instead, she invites you to:

  • Identify the specific thought. Write it down. For Brian, it was "I'm not good enough." For you, it might be a variant: "I'm not talented enough," "I'm not successful enough," "I'm not worthy."
  • Isolate the comparison. To whom are you comparing yourself? What qualities do you believe that person has that you lack? Make the comparison explicit and tangible.
  • Question whether you can know it's true. Can you absolutely know that the other person is happier, more secure, less fearful? Can you know their internal experience?
  • Notice what the belief feels like. When you sit with "I'm not good enough," where do you feel it in your body? What images arise? What urges emerge?
  • Return to presence. Close your eyes. Notice your breath. What is actually true right now, without the story? Are you breathing? Are you aware? Are you present?
  • Test the turnarounds. If the belief is "I'm not good enough," try on "I am good enough" or "I'm good enough exactly as I am." Where does your mind resist? Where does it acknowledge truth?

The shift Katie points toward is not about becoming good enough through achievement or approval. It's about recognizing that the "not good enough" narrative is built on images—movies in the mind—that cannot be verified. The sufficiency, the goodness, the okayness of simply being here, breathing, and present is already in place. The work is to see through the false comparative thoughts that obscure this obvious fact.

[0:03] what's going on with you today any

[0:06] questions we have Brian Brian hi bride

[0:14] Itay T hi honey what's up what's up oh

[0:20] boy um so I have a one-liner that I've

[0:26] been working with for well basically for

[0:28] most of my lives yeah yeah what is it

[0:32] Brian I'm not good enough oh yeah sorry

[0:41] about that oh okay my first question to

[0:46] you would be for what um honey you know

[0:54] what you're called to know okay I do you

[1:00] want to hear it yes to just do that with

[1:04] your head and to say yes and to move

[1:06] like that and to sit where you are and

[1:08] be where you are right here right now I

[1:12] mean this is like a no-brainer I'm not

[1:19] good enough are you good enough just to

[1:21] be here now where you're sitting look at

[1:24] the proof yeah this is all I'm called to

[1:30] do I have no plan about what we're going

[1:33] to talk about what's going to my job is

[1:36] to just be comfortable where I am where

[1:44] did you ever get the impression that you

[1:46] weren't good enough all of you if you

[1:48] look back at your lives and isolate any

[1:51] given moment and drop your story were

[1:54] you good enough to do that you I look at

[1:57] me went back and I see women judge me

[1:59] crying and my mother this and my life

[2:03] that and I was good enough

[2:06] I cried really well I was good enough I

[2:11] look back and I just look at her she was

[2:16] good enough

[2:18] but am I good enough from what know what

[2:30] future and why it's the comparison with

[2:38] [Music]

[2:40] its it's comparing myself with others

[2:48] throughout life and seeing that what

[2:54] seems to be where the attention seems to

[2:59] go whether it be whether it be by

[3:02] parents especially probably parents and

[3:05] family and others as you grow up you see

[3:08] all the attention going toward a certain

[3:12] those those people that succeed yes yeah

[3:17] yeah so their lives are much better than

[3:20] yours so look at one of those of those

[3:24] lives they so admired and held up to you

[3:28] that person's life yeah your parents

[3:31] really admire and really admire that

[3:34] person that person is better off than

[3:40] you are and by better off for me that

[3:43] means happy yeah I mean if you have all

[3:48] those things and all that security and

[3:51] the looks the the brakes the the brains

[3:56] the degrees then they're successful but

[4:01] I be quite successful with happy that's

[4:04] what it's all about so they're happy

[4:08] they're there they're better off than

[4:10] you are is it true but all of you find

[4:16] that person that you you you want to be

[4:20] like that successful person you're

[4:26] better off than you are Brian

[4:29] oh my darling is it true can you

[4:33] absolutely know that it's true they're

[4:35] better off no no honey you can't they're

[4:52] less fearful than you are less

[4:55] frustrated than you are

[4:59] is it true can you really know that it's

[5:01] true

[5:22] they feel more secure than you do like

[5:28] you would see them as secure yeah

[5:31] they're more secure than you are less

[5:34] frightened about their future than you

[5:36] are really it it seems like there's a

[5:53] okay the mind seems to go to an

[6:04] accomplishment or something in order to

[6:08] feel safe in order to calm down in other

[6:13] words if there's an accomplishment or

[6:15] getting something that we want so that's

[6:20] what you're looking for a place to rest

[6:23] exactly that sense

[6:26] let's keep let's keep moving we've

[6:28] looked at two questions all right or

[6:34] they're they're happier they're more

[6:36] secure they're less frightened they

[6:42] really seem more secure okay so they're

[6:46] more secure than you are and I'm talking

[6:50] about secured this feeling of security

[6:54] like Oh fine I can rest

[6:55] I've got enough I'm enough exactly in

[6:59] that sense they're more secure than you

[7:02] are how do you react what happens when

[7:07] you believe this up they feel more

[7:11] secure than I do they're more secure

[7:13] than I am now close your eyes we're

[7:16] going to meditate in that question and I

[7:19] invite you all to do that look if that

[7:22] person in your mind's eye that you're

[7:23] holding up as more secure make you more

[7:27] secure than you are than you do okay

[7:30] and now you brought up comparison

[7:33] earlier look at you the ego will show

[7:38] you clearly and then you'll compare

[7:43] that's the cure person who tenders you

[7:50] and in that past you see images of your

[7:56] failures how hard you've tried and

[7:59] failed fallen short then you see an

[8:05] image of that person you're holding up

[8:08] as so secure and ok now where do you

[8:22] feel the emotions as you sit in this

[8:26] very common mental state of yours

[8:33] we're not uncommon

[8:37] where are the emotions as you are

[8:40] comparing we're slowing how the ego

[8:44] works way down you see that person you

[8:49] see you in the past you see you failing

[8:52] in the future and I mean literally all

[8:57] of you new out there literally if you

[9:00] slow down you can see you those images

[9:02] of you in the past in your head future

[9:07] Dalene and then there's that person

[9:10] you're comparing yourself against that's

[9:12] also fake news that's an image in your

[9:15] head it's not real it's not a real

[9:20] person you can't take them out and shake

[9:23] their hand it's a movie in that fourth

[9:34] question just be here now without your

[9:40] story

[9:46] he is it he he is most mature than I am

[9:53] sure okay were they so who are you what

[10:07] are you who are you without the thought

[10:10] he's more secure than I am he feels more

[10:12] secure than I do

[10:19] so just doctor story did you feel that

[10:22] breath you feel your head going up and

[10:26] down in that moment and notice honey you

[10:31] you you know be secure and your breath

[10:33] notice how it goes in and out yeah even

[10:37] if you try to stop it it insists you'll

[10:39] choke it insists this goodness is

[10:44] unceasing it's always so present it's

[10:47] right under our nose it's even our nose

[10:55] sweetheart fall in love your head just

[10:57] did this can you see my head it just

[10:59] solitarily did you look at it some kind

[11:02] of miracle who are you about this story

[11:09] of what you cannot even know to be true

[11:14] but you can know that the movie in your

[11:18] head of you the failure that image and

[11:22] their the success that image when I say

[11:26] fake news I'm not just kidding unless

[11:28] you can take that person out of your

[11:29] head and show em to me can you imagine a

[11:34] world where we believe to be true what

[11:37] isn't real that's crazy and crazy making

[11:51] with

[11:52] out the story what comes up though is

[11:58] actually a fear of what knowing what to

[12:09] do with your hand right now you know

[12:11] yeah wife is like that yeah that's why I

[12:18] get this I just get a very strong image

[12:21] of my father pushing pushing pushing

[12:22] pushing yeah as to not fall behind as to

[12:29] not and and who was the greatest pusher

[12:32] your father or you uh well for me me

[12:39] yeah yeah yeah so you can't you couldn't

[12:44] stop him try and stop in the one you

[12:46] live with you yeah you turned out to be

[12:56] your father right pushing pushing

[12:59] pushing even when they die it doesn't

[13:03] matter Dead or Alive we blame it on them

[13:05] no one's left okay yeah let's let's try

[13:13] on turnarounds that Robinson is more

[13:17] secure than you are and I mean

[13:23] financially about his future that he's

[13:30] more secure when you are turning around

[13:33] what is the opposite of he is more

[13:35] secure than I am I am more secure than

[13:38] years so where does your mind go with

[13:44] that when you try it on

[13:50] have you ever money have you ever baked

[13:52] an emotion yeah have you ever faked your

[13:57] identity you feel terrible but you smile

[13:59] sure okay can you know that they're not

[14:03] doing the same thing

[14:09] right yeah there's this genuine - shake

[14:16] yeah I can't know that no know where my

[14:22] mind went was I don't have as big enough

[14:30] I don't have as large of a burden to

[14:34] maintain yeah I mean in my in my story

[14:39] we're we're kids and I'm thinking you

[14:41] know oh it must be so great to be in his

[14:46] house with his family well I don't know

[14:48] that the pressure is on I don't know

[14:50] yeah I don't know that that his father

[14:54] isn't 10 times more difficult or the the

[15:01] expectations for him aren't 10 times

[15:04] higher you have no idea yeah and maybe

[15:09] his father could care less and his

[15:11] mother could care less but he saw a

[15:13] movie of something like television or

[15:16] saw another neighbor and he is pushing

[15:21] him just as hard as your father did yeah

[15:25] you know like you've been pushing you

[15:27] yeah yeah it's such a an illusion an

[15:38] addiction an addiction to compare - yeah

[15:46] - just simply compare and yeah and who

[15:54] would you be in your lives if you didn't

[15:57] compare you with this fallacy running in

[16:02] your head about how other people feel I

[16:06] cannot know how you feel even when you

[16:09] tell me that's yours right well if I can

[16:13] get honest about mine as honest as your

[16:15] being with all of us today then

[16:19] you know I can make a lot of headway and

[16:23] what is true and what is not he is not

[16:26] more secure than I am he doesn't feel

[16:29] yeah and I like he doesn't feel as

[16:36] secure as I do which you really spoke to

[16:41] a few minutes ago good well the last

[16:47] thing you said to us really no idea how

[16:59] hard his father drove him or what he was

[17:03] jealous of and envious of and you cry

[17:19] he's more secure than I am turned around

[17:22] he is less secure than I am and just try

[17:30] it on

[17:31] as we wake up from the dream of I know

[17:35] mind yeah I envied the attention that he

[17:43] would get never never thinking that

[17:51] maybe for him the attention made him

[17:53] that much more anxious or feeling

[18:06] expectation from others or or that the

[18:09] attention may have meant to him maybe

[18:13] something that he was hearing in the

[18:14] house which was you need to do better be

[18:17] better you and then the attention from

[18:20] others would just compound that whereas

[18:22] for me it always felt like kind of

[18:25] invisible so

[18:29] we're all invisible yeah well we're all

[18:37] that's a broad stroke we can't wake up

[18:42] to it but we are as egos we are we live

[18:51] out of what it's like we live out of

[18:56] what we believe will impress another

[19:00] human being right

[19:03] that's pure ego false identity yeah and

[19:10] completely inauthentic and and and yeah

[19:15] like like you say and in one of your

[19:16] books it just turns back on itself yeah

[19:20] I won't appreciate me because I'm being

[19:26] inauthentic and trying to impress you

[19:28] exactly it's um there's a there's a

[19:31] thing that runs in it that lives in

[19:34] terror it's like last time I was with

[19:36] this person and what did I say you know

[19:39] oh I told him this and that oh I've got

[19:41] to you know I got you you have to

[19:42] remember all these things to hold it up

[19:44] you just can't and even a new

[19:48] relationship you know this identity the

[19:50] way I want you to see me there's no

[19:53] security in that that is the epitome of

[19:56] lack of security yeah yeah and so Who am

[20:04] I without the thought other people are

[20:08] more secure in themselves you know I am

[20:13] it changes what I think about the whole

[20:16] world really what I see out there the

[20:21] projection deserts your compassion yeah

[20:27] because you know what it feels like and

[20:33] passion is warranted

[20:40] hmm I never realized how much that the

[20:50] the message that I got as a young boy

[20:53] was pointing me to that very looking out

[20:57] there look at them look at like that was

[20:59] a way that my father would motivate you

[21:03] can he told PT to keep up yeah

[21:06] and Ruth said you had to was that your

[21:11] father or you know that was me

[21:15] ultimately yeah I agreed and and that

[21:23] was it that's what you believed yeah and

[21:27] didn't question it never too late you

[21:33] know my mother said your name is Byron

[21:37] Kathleen and it meant nothing to me

[21:40] Brian it had no meaning to me I didn't

[21:44] even know what that was and then she

[21:46] said it again and then someone else said

[21:49] it and then my father said it a nice

[21:52] older sister and it had no meaning but

[21:57] then there was the moment I believed it

[22:01] just like you did that that happening

[22:04] just like breath that happening

[22:08] believing brings that identity into in

[22:12] into being and that's the moment the

[22:17] moment I believed

[22:18] oh I'm Byron Katie Byron Kathleen the

[22:22] moment I believe it that was mine

[22:25] that I did that I can't blame my mother

[22:29] correct

[22:30] she can't no one can make us believe

[22:32] anything so believing is like living in

[22:37] that dream world I point to in

[22:40] questioning pops that that identity it

[22:47] just opens up until we can

[22:52] now that's security reason is our

[22:57] birthright and it's something no father

[23:00] no mother can give us no country no

[23:04] democracy no no one can give us this we

[23:09] have to realize for herself I'm

[23:14] responsible for my security and it

[23:18] doesn't come as a thing like money looks

[23:25] health we would be in trouble if if it

[23:36] depended on those things and our and

[23:38] identified as so we believe we are and

[23:44] should be and want to be is everything

[23:49] but right here now and the answer is

[23:52] right here now you are to play your part

[23:56] need to wear that maroon shirt you need

[24:01] to be sitting where you are that's

[24:04] reality right here right now it's just

[24:08] can you be comfortable in it or are you

[24:10] in the dream of the past the dream of

[24:12] the future your body that object will

[24:15] show you where to plant yourself

[24:17] even as it's walking here now here now

[24:25] here now but oh good one oh my gosh that

[24:31] was a good one boy that was that was a

[24:34] past or that was a future

[24:42] but it's pure imagination its that is

[24:46] not I come home so there really is no

[24:52] plan needed in reality or you can try

[24:56] one on and it's it's it's it's it's

[25:00] fabulous and magical it's just not my

[25:03] goal the trip right and then along the

[25:09] way if my mind is clear it just shifts

[25:12] like Senate and I was telling you Brian

[25:14] it gives me something better every time

[25:17] it's just that I'm not attached to the

[25:20] direction sure I can say I'm going to go

[25:25] straight if if if if it's clear to me to

[25:33] turn I'm free to turn and I don't have

[25:37] to do it right because there is no wrong

[25:39] road it's what we're thinking of

[25:42] believing along the road that could use

[25:44] a little work know when you are who you

[25:50] want to be in this young boy's dream

[25:54] that you've held on to when you are that

[25:56] person you're gonna take this with you

[25:59] and there's no security in it great

[26:04] it'll never be enough well not unless

[26:08] you can prove otherwise but oh my god

[26:11] this is enough for me and you know why

[26:13] it's it's enough for me there's nothing

[26:17] I have to do here I don't have to talk

[26:20] to you I don't have to I don't have to

[26:23] do there's nothing I have to do here oh

[26:25] my god I am the biggest success I've

[26:28] ever known

[26:31] but there's not a human being in the

[26:33] world that cannot say that if they're

[26:35] awake to what's obvious but the ego will

[26:43] throw a little tear into the mix like

[26:47] this is just ball this is this is not

[26:52] this is not going to feed my kids it's

[26:54] not going to

[26:56] give me a retirement this is not yeah oh

[26:59] boy good luck with that

[27:01] yeah this is not going to you know take

[27:04] my retirement right here right now all

[27:09] the security I need if I lose my home

[27:12] and they throw me out on the curb and I

[27:15] have no food no nothing the worst that

[27:17] can happen as I sit on the curb is this

[27:19] and I have tested and I can do it I'm a

[27:26] skeptic so I continue to just allow is

[27:33] it true to be well though is it true to

[27:38] live and you know your father you know I

[27:44] could call them the push our teachers it

[27:48] push you to this moment without him you

[27:51] can't have it yeah yeah those people

[27:57] that hurt us those are our teachers I

[28:01] see what I was thinking and believing

[28:03] about that pusher that person and I put

[28:08] what I was thinking and believing about

[28:09] that person on paper and then I do what

[28:12] you and I have done here I just I just

[28:17] worked them through those four questions

[28:19] and turn around and just get still and

[28:22] let what is there show me and you do

[28:25] that well that's a gift that's all the

[28:28] gift I that's all the gift I need to

[28:31] have a happy life he's more secure than

[28:38] I and we looked at he's less secure than

[28:40] I am you did well with that exploration

[28:47] with all of this he's made more than I

[28:53] am I am more secure than I am now the

[29:00] thing it's a view of past future there's

[29:03] no security there well I was just about

[29:08] to

[29:11] it's just fear underneath it it's just a

[29:15] fear of this absolutely known unknown

[29:23] known in the moment

[29:25] unknown at the same time and to create

[29:35] it to create a story in order to have

[29:38] some sense or idea of security yeah

[29:43] something to drive you right in a

[29:47] direction that of course how can I know

[29:51] I mean if it was the right direction so

[29:55] many years ago Here I am how am i doing

[30:01] same thing another future it's

[30:07] ridiculous exactly that is laughable

[30:25] so simple we can do it from where we are

[30:28] we can get ourselves fool by just

[30:40] identifying what we're thinking and

[30:44] believing in question it and your head

[30:51] doing that and your palm doing that oh

[30:54] my god this such joy in the simplest

[30:58] thing and so there's sometimes there's a

[31:09] disc in Envy me but what is the

[31:16] stillness well it's just another thought

[31:20] of I should be doing something else this

[31:30] is another comparison isn't it yes

[31:32] rather than okay is that true doesn't

[31:38] seem to be I seem to be you know

[31:43] spinning in a chair when I was where I

[31:48] perceived you to be and at one point it

[31:51] was you know was testing I'll never do

[31:55] anything again then you know just

[31:57] sitting there being in to move me right

[32:00] nothing to move me I'll just a loser

[32:02] just nothing and then I had to pee and

[32:13] it moves me which I don't even know

[32:17] where the bathroom is but it does yeah

[32:22] it it is it's not a mystery it's the

[32:28] unknown known and it's I just trusted a

[32:35] hundred percent because I benefit

[32:37] yeah and the illusion of time then no

[32:42] and you can't get lost can you I mean

[32:48] not like just letting it go wherever you

[32:53] find yourself times I have those

[32:56] impulses and I pull back because I'm

[32:58] like I don't know why my body feels like

[33:00] going and getting in a car and taking a

[33:02] drive to I don't know where yeah so do

[33:06] it see where yeah maybe I'm just going

[33:14] to the car to clean it out who knows

[33:16] yeah maybe that's the only place that

[33:33] rest possibly is as you say here now but

[33:38] trust the trust the ego as your teacher

[33:41] to push you meaning you'll feel those

[33:45] emotions and and something like we've

[33:48] looked at here of disappointment and and

[33:51] you feel those emotions you know

[33:53] something's going on in your head that

[33:55] needs a little inquiry yeah and that's

[33:59] Muggs the ego you know it's it's um it's

[34:05] bringing me home and emotions let me

[34:08] know look to my head at the ego with

[34:12] that past future and put it on paper and

[34:14] then just question this is a practice

[34:18] and those of you that are meditators you

[34:22] know stay with that practice all of you

[34:25] whatever your practice stay in your

[34:27] practice you know right now life is the

[34:29] practice of all of us it seems to be but

[34:32] waking up to reality and the cause of

[34:36] all life you don't that's that's where

[34:41] these questions will enhance any

[34:45] practice a person has

[34:50] and if nothing anyone has to do it's

[34:54] just what was shown to me and and what

[35:00] I'm so grateful for thank you Brian

[35:06] as I am grateful for you thank you

[35:11] [Music]

[35:20] you
