Ego and Egoic Reaction: Why ArguingWith the Mind Strengthens It

Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle
May 21, 2020
読了 約10分

The ego is the unobserved mind—a semi-autonomous entity that has consolidated over years of conditioning into what feels like a real self. When you identify with this entity, you react to events without awareness, then interpret those reactions as confirmation of your story, creating a vicious circle of emotional amplification and external drama. The task is not to defeat or argue with the ego, but to become the observer of the mind; this creates space between your true consciousness and the patterned reactivity, collapsing the ego's power to generate suffering both within yourself and in your relationships.

What is the Ego, Exactly?

Eckhart Tolle describes ego not as a moral failing or character flaw, but as the unobserved mind—a state of complete lack of awareness. The ego is not some dark force you must battle; it is simply the mind running on its own, without the light of consciousness shining on it. Over years and centuries of conditioning, this unconscious mental activity has consolidated into what feels like a cohesive entity: a voice in your head that has seemingly become real.

Tolle notes that this entity is "not ultimately real but seemingly real enough" when you confuse who you are with the talking, reacting presence in your head. The problem is not that the voice exists—everyone has a thinking mind—but that you identify with it, believing it to be who you are. Once that identification happens, the mind becomes an energetic entity, amplified by emotion and feedback loops. Underneath all the noise and defensiveness, though, lies something true: your actual being, the consciousness that existed before the ego consolidated.

In Eastern traditions, Tolle points out, this accumulated pattern is called karma—not mystical punishment from a past life, but inherited patterns of reactivity that you carry and mistake for identity. The intensity and flavor of someone's ego varies greatly. Some people have a relatively light conditioning; others carry extremely dense, dramatic, angry, or melancholic patterns—easily upset, always scanning for injury or offense, perpetually ready to defend.

How Does the Egoic Entity Strengthen Itself?

The ego's primary mode of operation is reactivity without awareness. When something happens—an email goes unanswered, someone questions your viewpoint, you perceive a slight—the unobserved mind automatically reacts. Because there is no gap between stimulus and response, no space of awareness, the reaction is entirely governed by conditioning. You have no choice in the matter; you are completely at the mercy of what happens around you.

What makes this loop so powerful is the role of emotion. Thoughts and emotions feed each other in a vicious circle. The entity thinks something, which generates an emotional charge. That emotional energy then amplifies and reinforces the thought. The thought generates more emotion. Over time, this feedback loop becomes so intense that the ego feels extremely real, even absolutely true.

Tolle illustrates this with a simple, relatable example: someone doesn't reply to your email. For a person relatively free of ego around this issue, it's neutral. He must be busy. Maybe he doesn't read email much. That's just how it is. But for someone operating from identification with ego, the same event triggers a story: He ignored me. I wrote three times. He doesn't care. How dare he. This interpretation then becomes the seed of a proliferating narrative. The person finds other incidents to support the story, each one "proving" the character of the other person. The ego inflates itself on this reactivity, growing stronger with each mental rehearsal.

The next stage is action. Upset, the person writes angry emails, makes accusations, perhaps even threatens. Now the external world begins to respond. The other person, themselves not fully enlightened, reacts to the aggression. A cycle of escalation begins, and what started as a simple non-response has become a full-blown conflict in the person's life, occupying mental and emotional energy for weeks or months. The ego has literally created a drama out of an insignificant event, and then uses that drama as proof that its interpretation was correct.

Why Arguing With Ego Is Futile

One of Tolle's most striking assertions is that you cannot convince the egoic entity of its own illusory nature through argument. This is not pessimism—it is a structural truth about how the ego works. Any argument directed at the ego only strengthens it.

Here's why: Peaceful discussion, genuine dialogue, requires a degree of disidentification from mental positions. It requires at least a small gap between you and your viewpoint—space where you can hold a perspective loosely, question it, revise it. But the ego cannot do this. When you challenge an ego-identified position, the ego experiences that challenge as a threat to its survival. It is not calmly defending an idea; it is fighting for its existence. So it doubles down, digs in, mobilizes defensive energy, and in many cases becomes aggressive.

Tolle notes that even questioning someone's viewpoint can trigger extreme defensive measures because the ego has invested its sense of self into that viewpoint. The person is no longer discussing a topic; they are defending who they believe they are. As you can see "everywhere on television or in daily life," people become increasingly hostile and irrational when their core positions are questioned. The more you argue, the more entrenched the ego becomes. Ultimately, it will always "win" in its own perverse way—it will win you over into its drama, drawing you into reactivity.

Tolle invokes an unexpected metaphor: vicious dogs. A dog that seems vicious is not intrinsically cruel; it reacts viciously because of past trauma or conditioning. Underneath the aggression, there is goodness. The same is true of the egoic entity in humans. Underneath the madness, defensiveness, and aggression lies the truth of who you really are—the consciousness that is aware of the thoughts and emotions, not trapped in them.

The Role of Interpretation and the Echo Effect

A crucial insight Tolle offers is that the moment you interpret something, you are projecting. You have no clue why someone did or didn't do something. The instant you go beyond the bare fact—he didn't reply—and assign meaning—because he doesn't respect me—you have entered the realm of fiction. And because you have no way to verify your interpretation, dwelling on it is futile.

Tolle illustrates this with a personal example: When his book The Power of Now first came out, people suggested he send a copy to Deepak Chopra. He did. There was no response. In an earlier phase of his life, when ego was still operating, he might have interpreted this as rejection, rudeness, dismissal. But by then, his consciousness was awake. So he simply noted the fact: No reply. He must be busy. Maybe he read it, maybe not. Who knows? No story. No emotional charge. Just the isness of what happened. (As it turned out, Chopra did eventually read the book, years later when it was already successful, and wrote an endorsement. But Tolle's point stands: the interpretation was irrelevant. The fact was simple.)

This connects to something even deeper: what you put out into the world comes back to you. If you react to events with aggression, demand, complaint—the energy of ego trying to strengthen itself—that energy ripples into the external world. People react to your reaction. Because they are not enlightened, they have egos of their own; your defensive posture triggers their defensiveness. What you send out as an egoic reaction echoes back to you from the world, amplified and distorted. And then the ego seizes on this echo as absolute proof that its original interpretation was correct. See? I told you he was hostile. Now he's confirming it.

You don't see that you yourself created the very situation you are now using as evidence. The whole drama is a feedback loop, a snake eating its tail. The person doesn't realize—the entity doesn't realize—that it is creating the entire story, and that what comes back from outside is simply its own conditioning echoing back.

Breaking the Cycle: Becoming the Observer

So if arguing with ego is futile, and if egoic reaction perpetuates itself through loops of emotion and interpretation, how do you escape? Tolle's answer is deceptively simple: become the observer or witness of your mind. You are no longer in the grip of the egoic entity the moment consciousness turns its light on the mind itself.

This is what Tolle means by "space" in consciousness. When you are completely identified with a thought or emotion, there is no distance, no awareness of the process. You are entirely merged with it. But the moment you step back and observe—I notice I'm having the thought that he disrespected me; I notice the feeling of anger arising in my body—something shifts. You are no longer the thought or emotion. You are the awareness in which it appears. This is a fundamental shift in identity, from ego to consciousness.

Tolle emphasizes that when engaged in any discussion or conflict, the critical task is not to demand that the other person create space in themselves. Rather, you must create space in you. You can see immediately when the other person is getting upset and why—because their identification with their mental position has been triggered. Their ego feels threatened and is "barking back." But if you can maintain your own inner space, your own awareness, something remarkable happens: you are no longer feeding the reactivity. You are not adding fuel to the fire. And sometimes—not always—this can allow the other person's defensiveness to settle.

Ego as Karma and the Teaching Function of Dense Egos

Tolle circles back to the concept of ego as karma—inherited patterns, often from family lineage or cultural conditioning. These patterns are what perpetuate suffering, both in your own inner world and in how you create reactivity around you.

He also offers a striking perspective on encountering dense, difficult egos in others. If you are on a path of awakening and find yourself repeatedly confronted with people who have thick, reactive egos—people creating suffering for themselves and others—remember that they are also your teachers. Their very density, their refusal to wake up, is exactly what calls you to practice non-reactivity and presence. Rather than seeing them as obstacles, you can see them as providing the friction that strengthens your own capacity to remain awake and aware. If you avoid all difficult people, you never develop this capacity. The dense egos are here to teach you presence.

Where to Go From Here

The practical path forward involves a shift in your relationship to your own mind. Rather than trying to think your way out of ego (which only strengthens it), practice watching. The next time you feel triggered—by a perceived slight, an unanswered message, a challenge to your viewpoint—pause and observe. What is the story your mind is constructing? What emotion is being generated? Can you stay present with the raw fact of what happened, without the layer of interpretation?

In relationships and conflicts, notice when you are about to react. Can you create a gap? Can you respond instead, from a place of presence? Response, Tolle suggests through his framework, is presence-based; reaction is ego-based.

Remember also that awakening is not a permanent state you achieve and then coast on. Many people on the spiritual path still encounter moments where the ego takes over. The task is not perfection but practice. Each moment you catch yourself in reactivity and shift back to observation, you are weakening the ego's unconscious grip and strengthening the light of consciousness.

[0:04] you switched off your cell phone so here

[0:07] [Music]

[0:13] and what about your mine's not as easy

[0:35] because it's not just well it is a voice

[0:39] in the head but over the years and

[0:47] centuries and millennia it's more than

[0:54] just a voice there's an int of entity it

[1:00] has turned into a kind of entity and me

[1:12] not ultimately real but seemingly real

[1:20] enough when you are when you confuse who

[1:24] you are with the talking and reacting

[1:32] entity in the head energized amplified

[1:43] by emotions in a vicious circle the

[1:52] emotions are created by the whatever the

[1:55] entity is thinking and the energy of the

[1:59] emotion further amplifies the entity

[2:18] eagle eagle

[2:34] and the strengths of that varies from

[2:38] person to person in some way we could

[2:43] say that the entity is an aspect of

[2:46] karma what is in the East is called

[2:49] Karma

[2:53] it's a patterns inside you inherited

[3:01] patterns inside you that you confuse

[3:04] with who you are consciousness

[3:09] identifies with the patterns

[3:20] and in some humans it's a very heavy

[3:25] entity extremely dramatic or angry or

[3:36] very heavy and sad easily upset always

[3:50] looking out for some perceived injury or

[3:56] slide always ready to jump to its

[4:00] defense even questioning somebody's

[4:05] viewpoint because you identify with the

[4:09] the mind which is ego so any viewpoint

[4:13] is invested with a sense of self the ego

[4:17] is in your viewpoint that you're

[4:20] expressing about this or that so even

[4:25] somebody questioning your viewpoint can

[4:31] lead to extreme defensive measures or

[4:40] aggression as you can witness everywhere

[4:46] on television or in daily life

[4:57] they're peaceful discussion with that

[5:01] entity is not really possible

[5:10] because of peaceful discussion about

[5:13] something implies that there's some

[5:16] degree of dis identification from that

[5:24] mind made entity there is at least a

[5:28] little bit of space in you and the other

[5:35] person

[5:41] primarily in you that's the main thing

[5:44] is not to demand that there should be

[5:48] space in the other person but to make

[5:51] sure that there's space in you when

[5:53] you're discussing something

[6:01] and you can see if the other person is

[6:04] already getting upset you can see why

[6:11] immediately identification with a mental

[6:17] position ego the entity feels threatened

[6:24] and is barking back at you some dogs do

[6:40] that also but the same as in humans in

[6:46] evening vicious dogs they are only

[6:48] vicious because of their past underneath

[6:53] the viciousness in every dog there is a

[6:57] goodness and underneath the madness of

[7:03] the egoic entity there is also the truth

[7:07] of who you are or who that other human

[7:11] being is so your task as you're

[7:18] confronted with these entities and you

[7:22] are all the time occasionally your own

[7:27] still takes over perhaps one or two of

[7:31] you may still experience it occasionally

[7:43] the task is to to be there as the

[7:51] observer or witness of your mind then

[7:57] you are no longer in the grip of the end

[8:01] egoic entity so ego then is the

[8:10] unobserved mind complete lack of

[8:14] awareness in other words there is only

[8:18] mind and that's the state of one could

[8:27] call it not excite or dreamlike state in

[8:34] which you dream up your life and then

[8:42] things happen around you because in

[8:46] every human per every person's life they

[8:49] are you come into this world here and

[8:54] there are you're surrounded by certain

[8:57] situation things happen to you you react

[9:06] the the entity reacts without any

[9:13] awareness it reacts according to its

[9:18] aggressive defensive conditioning

[9:25] so it's completely at the mercy of what

[9:30] happens around it and it perpetuates its

[9:35] own state so an event that for somebody

[9:41] who is relatively free of the ego at

[9:47] least in that particular area of their

[9:49] lives the same event happening to one

[9:53] person it's relatively unimportant Oh

[9:59] akka didn't reply to my email to one

[10:04] person that is he must be very busy or

[10:08] maybe he doesn't even read it and that's

[10:13] just how it is

[10:16] and the other person feels deeply

[10:19] offended I wrote to him three times

[10:28] nothing didn't even bother to reply to

[10:33] me and that's the beginning of the story

[10:39] and that proliferates into how dreadful

[10:43] a person he is and then you find other

[10:48] things that you can focus on and that's

[10:54] how the the entity strengthens itself it

[10:59] gates grows it inflates itself by this

[11:02] reactivity so a relatively insignificant

[11:05] thing is this entity across personalizes

[11:09] everything that happens it's to do with

[11:10] me they're trying to do something to me

[11:17] he's ignoring me how dare he

[11:24] and so it grows the next thing is the

[11:35] emails become angry and accusations or

[11:41] phone calls

[11:44] I'll get you that's how it grows

[11:57] next time you walk out of your house

[11:59] I'll be behind you it's how it can grow

[12:03] these are in more extreme forms but not

[12:07] uncommon so no it's doesn't matter to

[12:11] what extent it grows but you can see the

[12:15] simple fact of somebody not replying

[12:17] becomes something dreadful that's

[12:22] happening to me and proliferate into a

[12:26] story it can occupy a large section of

[12:30] your life and another person said oh

[12:33] that's how it is

[12:40] when the the power of now first came out

[12:48] some people suggested to me it would be

[12:51] a good idea to send a copy to Deepak

[12:54] Chopra and I did because that maybe

[12:59] he'll read it and the hill there was

[13:01] only it was published published in three

[13:03] thousand copies the first edition which

[13:06] had to be taken by carriage to book

[13:09] stores in the paper in a plastic bag and

[13:16] so I signed it to him and nothing as if

[13:25] it had disappeared into the whole and

[13:30] now this is what happens when people

[13:32] send books to me but and now I know why

[13:36] because you can't even read them all you

[13:40] can't possibly read them all the

[13:42] manuscripts and the books but luckily

[13:47] that entity was no longer operating

[13:50] inside me so there was no complaining

[13:52] that Deepak had not it just there was no

[13:57] reply well that's just how it is

[13:59] he must be busy maybe he read it didn't

[14:02] like it maybe didn't read it who knows

[14:06] the moment I interpret something I'm

[14:09] projecting so it's futile to interpret

[14:15] something - you have no clue why it's

[14:17] it's just that's how it is it's the

[14:20] simple isness of fact and of course the

[14:24] truth is sure he never even saw it

[14:27] because he gets too many but it's

[14:30] impossible

[14:36] by the way later when path na was

[14:39] already doing very well he did write an

[14:41] endorsement or it wasn't needed anymore

[14:43] but that was very nice but if I had sent

[14:56] him angry emails I still have not heard

[14:59] from you after three months of sending

[15:02] ten emails you still neglected to inform

[15:06] me whether I was Hitler cetera then I

[15:10] don't think he would have written an

[15:11] endorsement so your reaction determines

[15:17] also what happens next so if your

[15:21] reaction is it an egoic one it's not

[15:26] simply the reaction to something that

[15:28] has happened in the present moment it

[15:32] also determines how the events unfold

[15:36] from now on so if the egoic reaction is

[15:45] aggressive negative demanding

[15:49] complaining

[15:50] whatever the ego does to strengthen

[15:53] itself to feel stronger then that

[15:58] creates an echo in the external world

[16:00] it's like you're shouting a particular

[16:03] sound you're sorting it out into the

[16:05] world and then it echoes back so what

[16:11] you're putting out then as in your

[16:13] reaction which comes to words and

[16:15] actions then comes back at you people

[16:21] react to your reaction because they are

[16:23] not perhaps totally enlightened in which

[16:26] case they wouldn't react to your

[16:27] reactions but they are also they have

[16:29] their egos so they react to your

[16:33] reaction and you create a whole train of

[16:36] reactivity and this is how the drama

[16:42] develops and grows and it's all taken

[16:45] for absolutely real and

[16:47] that's how it is you don't realize the

[16:51] entity doesn't realize it's creating the

[16:53] whole story and all its years back is

[16:57] the echo of its own conditioning coming

[17:01] back to you from the external the

[17:03] outside world

[17:05] and so and of course that then serves as

[17:09] a very powerful confirmation that your

[17:12] initial interpretation of events was

[17:14] absolutely correct so because he says

[17:21] you see I he his original intention was

[17:26] to deceive me to whatever and then when

[17:32] I confronted him he got angry because I

[17:35] was right it's so intense and if you've

[17:44] ever tried to argue with the egoic

[17:46] entity with someone you can see the

[17:50] futility of it it is impossible you

[17:52] cannot convince this egoic entity of its

[17:57] own illusory nature you can't you only

[18:02] strengthen it arguing with the ego is

[18:08] quite funny ultimately but it's an

[18:11] absurd enterprise on its own level it

[18:18] will always win and it will draw you

[18:22] well the more you start arguing with the

[18:24] ego you're already trapped in your own

[18:26] mind patterns so the Karma then this

[18:35] being an aspect of karma karma is what

[18:40] happens usually people say karma is what

[18:43] happens to you but more importantly

[18:45] karma is how you react to what happens

[18:49] because that is what perpetuates the

[18:52] conditioning and that creates what you

[18:55] experience as your life and it creates

[18:59] how other people

[19:02] react to you so how you experience

[19:05] interactions amazing so often I observe

[19:14] the the futility of egoic reaction unit

[19:19] nothing to reacting to nothingness and

[19:23] blowing it up like a huge soap bubble

[19:28] talking about it for days on end until

[19:35] finally reality confirms you were right

[19:39] on a normal it's quite a trap so you

[19:46] need to

[19:52] the the heavier the egoic entity in you

[20:00] is the more dense it is because the

[20:03] density we could call it that of the I'm

[20:06] talking about ego the emotional aspect

[20:09] of ego is - is a large part of the

[20:13] emotional aspect of ego is the pain

[20:15] bodies they pain body really is the

[20:18] emotional aspect of the egoic entity and

[20:23] the density of the ego in you varies

[20:28] from person to person there is probably

[20:34] nobody listening to this here or there

[20:43] this is the wormhole of the camera

[20:49] through which the words are reaching out

[20:54] and this somebody the other end

[21:04] not just somebody far more people than

[21:07] sitting here the thousands of people at

[21:09] the same but there's nobody people

[21:19] sitting here or at the other end of the

[21:23] wormhole whose ego is extraordinarily

[21:27] dense or if they are they won't stay

[21:33] here for very long or they would switch

[21:38] off this green thing this is awful

[21:43] there's nothing that the ego likes less

[21:46] than to hear about itself so it is then

[21:56] not so likely that in you there is this

[21:59] great density of the ego and plane body

[22:01] but you still encounter in your daily

[22:04] life you will still encounter many

[22:06] humans who manifest extreme density of

[22:10] ego and pain body

[22:17] and of course those people create

[22:20] suffering for themselves and others

[22:23] that's their purpose in life that's

[22:27] where they are at in their evolutionary

[22:29] journey they are here as spiritual

[22:34] teachers they are creating suffering

[22:38] which eventually will awaken them when

[22:44] when they realize that the suffering

[22:46] they experienced is self-created

[22:49] but that could take a while before they

[22:52] realize that in the mean time they might

[22:56] attempt to create suffering for you at

[22:59] the same it's because they go together

[23:02] and so they become your teachers because

[23:08] they force you into more intense

[23:10] presence or they draw you into the egoic

[23:14] unconsciousness so when you are

[23:19] confronted with dense egos this one

[23:24] spiritual teacher in India called them

[23:27] ego G's G being a term of respect so eat

[23:33] the ego G's you are still many around

[23:38] and they're here to to teach you more

[23:47] presence of course that they don't know

[23:49] that that's what they're doing but

[23:52] within the totality that's ultimately

[23:54] what their function is in the

[23:57] evolutionary journey of humanity

[24:02] you

Ego is the unobserved mind—a state of complete lack of awareness in which consciousness has identified with accumulated mental and emotional patterns. Over time, this unconscious mental chatter has consolidated into what feels like a real, autonomous entity with its own voice and reactivity. It is 'not ultimately real but seemingly real enough' when you mistake it for who you are.
Arguing with ego only strengthens it because the ego experiences any challenge to its positions as a threat to its survival. Since the person has identified their sense of self with their viewpoint, they cannot hold it lightly or revise it; they can only defend it aggressively. The more you argue, the more entrenched the ego becomes.
When you react with anger, demand, or complaint, that emotional energy ripples into the world. Other people, not being enlightened, react to your reaction with their own egos. This creates an echo: what you sent out comes back amplified, and the ego seizes on this as proof that its original interpretation was correct, never seeing that it created the drama itself.
Creating space means stepping back from identification with your thoughts and emotions and becoming the observer of them instead. When you notice a thought or emotion arising without being completely merged with it, you are no longer in the grip of the ego. This gap between awareness and the mind is where freedom exists.
Rather than getting rid of ego permanently, the path is to practice observing it with awareness whenever it arises. Even people well along on the spiritual path still encounter moments where ego takes over. The task is not perfection but continuous practice of catching reactivity and returning to presence.
When you encounter people with thick, reactive egos—people creating suffering for themselves and others—they provide the friction that strengthens your own capacity to remain awake and present. Rather than obstacles, they are opportunities to practice non-reactivity and deepen your realization.
Reaction is automatic, unconscious, and ego-based—it flows from identification with mental patterns and emotions. Response is presence-based; it involves a gap where you can choose how to act. By creating space in consciousness, you transform automatic reaction into conscious response.
