Kirtan Artist
C.C. White is a kirtan artist known for what she calls Soul Kirtan, and she is widely recognized as "The Queen of Soul Kirtan." Her performances, often with her signature red head wrap, pair powerful, soaring call-and-response vocals with masterful musicianship, drawing audiences into ecstatic chant and dance. Her stage presence ranges from quiet and angelic to powerful and earth moving.
Her CD "This IS Soul Kirtan!" debuted at the top of the iTunes World Chart. It blends kirtan with old school soul, reggae, Southern blues, gospel, R&B, jazz and a bit of Latin flair. She tours around the world, and has been featured in Yoga Journal and Origin magazines. Her music has been played on radio stations including KCRW, Krishna Das Yoga Radio on SiriusXM, KPFK and WRPI.
C.C. has sung on Grammy award winning and nominated albums, including "Get Up" with Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, "Maestro" by Taj Mahal and "Branches of the Same Tree" by Rocky Duwani. She has also recorded and sung with artists such as Neil Young, Mavis Staples, Jackson Browne, Joe Cocker, Sting, Lenny Kravitz and Jason Mraz. She has been inducted into the Grammys Recording Academy as a voting member.
Her mother sang gospel operatic music to her before she was born. C.C. has sung since the age of two and played piano since six, and she attended Sewell Music Conservatory and The Peabody Institute of Music. She describes music as the air she breathes and lives for touching as many souls as she can.
Worth Knowing
C.C. White, known as 'The Queen of Soul Kirtan,' occupies a rare space in contemporary chant and yoga music — a classically trained vocalist who brings the emotional depth and improvisational sensibility of gospel, soul, and R&B into the Sanskrit devotional tradition. Her 2012 album *This IS Soul Kirtan* debuted at the top of the iTunes World chart, signaling that there was an audience hungry for kirtan that didn't sound like pale imitation of Indian classical music, but rather something rooted in the African American spiritual and soul lineages. Beyond her own recordings, she's collaborated with major artists across genres — Ben Harper, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Taj Mahal, and Lenny Kravitz have all sought her voice for their projects. She's also a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys), which reflects the music industry's recognition of her standing. What draws serious listeners is not generic 'uplifting' messaging but a distinctive sonic signature: a voice trained in gospel phrasing applied to mantra, arrangements that honor both the sparseness of traditional kirtan and the lushness of soul production.
