[0:04] the respected
[0:05] teacher dear noble
[0:08] sangha
[0:10] their family
[0:13] we are
[0:14] in our last week like my brother shared
[0:19] over the summer retreat
[0:21] is the only month where we uh have
[0:23] children lots of children come
[0:27] and there are monks and nuns very
[0:29] very grateful for you to bring your
[0:31] family here to children
[0:34] although we do see it is very
[0:36] challenging
[0:37] for some parents to be here
[0:41] but it is uh it's good to
[0:43] be challenged here in the sangha
[0:48] so we hope that you
[0:50] find a way to
[0:51] [Music]
[0:53] learn to be with your family with your
[0:55] children
[0:56] with your partner uh with yourself
[1:00] more compassionately more kind
[1:03] as you are a parent as you're a husband
[1:06] a wife
[1:08] a partner whatever that relationship is
[1:12] that hopefully you'll stay here you'll
[1:14] learn to be more kind to yourself
[1:18] and through that you can be kind to
[1:21] your
[1:22] your loved ones
[1:24] so this is what our hope for the summer
[1:26] retreat uh
[1:28] that's all you know we we
[1:30] somewhere we treat is uh
[1:33] is a family practice
[1:35] and so
[1:36] this is uh
[1:37] the reality of being in in life in the
[1:41] world
[1:42] and we thank you for having children
[1:44] because we've chosen the life to have no
[1:47] children so
[1:49] we get to play with your children
[1:52] and to give you your children back when
[1:54] they cry
[2:00] i said okay mommy
[2:04] yesterday i
[2:06] i walk around and any new baby in the
[2:09] village and apprehend it i always come
[2:12] and
[2:13] i touch the head of the baby
[2:16] and i pray the baby
[2:18] will have
[2:19] [Music]
[2:20] you know a nourishing growth
[2:23] so
[2:25] there was one six months only sometimes
[2:28] they bring the baby even younger
[2:31] while it's still in the womb
[2:34] so i can't
[2:36] do the forehead so i have to touch my
[2:37] head now
[2:39] and you can feel
[2:41] the energy of the baby
[2:44] so we
[2:46] this is a beautiful
[2:48] uh
[2:51] environment that our teacher tai has
[2:53] created
[2:55] that meditation and mindfulness and the
[2:58] practice is uh
[2:59] is nothing
[3:02] separate from our life our daily life
[3:05] including our family
[3:07] including children crying
[3:09] including
[3:11] boys running and
[3:12] falling and
[3:14] getting bloody nose and
[3:17] even a boy is fighting
[3:19] so we learn how to deal with that
[3:21] mindfully
[3:23] kindly and compassionately
[3:26] so this is uh the practice so the
[3:28] practice is not something separate from
[3:30] your family from your relationship from
[3:34] your daily life
[3:35] some people think that this is
[3:37] practice and then
[3:39] something else
[3:41] so more and more i see what thai's
[3:43] vision is to
[3:45] use the practice and to really apply it
[3:49] to our daily life including the
[3:51] challenges the suffering whatever we
[3:54] face
[3:55] in our business in our work in the
[3:59] environment that we're in
[4:02] so this is uh whatever you're here for
[4:05] this is very important to decide not to
[4:07] make that distinction
[4:10] this is my time this is now this is
[4:13] family time
[4:15] yeah
[4:16] your family time is your practice
[4:18] so being with the children and those who
[4:21] are here who don't have children
[4:24] please practice with that
[4:26] because that's our future our children
[4:30] so this is a very important element in
[4:32] plum village practice we
[4:34] we
[4:35] try our best to apply in every aspect
[4:40] and
[4:41] don't underestimate the ordinary things
[4:45] as you see we only sit maybe 30 minutes
[4:48] in the morning
[4:49] and maybe 30 minutes in the evening
[4:52] and i always ask well what happens to
[4:55] the
[4:56] rest of the hour the 10 hour or the 20
[4:59] hour
[5:00] outside of the meditation hall that is a
[5:02] very good question
[5:05] so sometimes we are in the
[5:09] interested in meditation and we think it
[5:11] is
[5:12] in the hall or is when we're sitting
[5:14] like this
[5:16] so please uh
[5:17] [Music]
[5:19] re-envision the practice as uh
[5:22] and when i learn
[5:24] most
[5:25] that really stood out for me was
[5:28] washing the dishes
[5:30] we wash our dish we eat three times and
[5:33] we wash our dishes three times
[5:37] and you know as a parent you might think
[5:40] that's a chore
[5:42] or as anybody you think is something to
[5:44] get rid of so you can go have your tea
[5:46] and then
[5:48] do your practice
[5:50] but
[5:52] it's very unique to have a place like
[5:54] this to to have uh you come here and you
[5:56] do dishes
[5:59] uh what can you imagine one day the
[6:01] monks and nuns ass type type we should
[6:03] go get washing
[6:06] to wash the dishes quickly so we have
[6:09] more time to practice
[6:12] i have a feeling ty would say
[6:14] he would smile
[6:16] right
[6:17] so why do we have to ask why are we
[6:20] asked to wash dishes
[6:22] why is there a sanitation team
[6:26] so in a way we're making the monastery
[6:28] more more kind of like what you have at
[6:31] home
[6:32] not of course all of it
[6:36] so in your
[6:37] time when you wash the dishes and we're
[6:40] taught when we're nervous to wash it
[6:43] like the baby buddha
[6:46] or jesus
[6:48] or allah or something your loved one
[6:52] so we wash our dishes and we enjoy
[6:54] washing our dishes
[6:56] as if it is
[6:58] the most important thing for us to do
[7:02] so it's not in the meditation hall
[7:06] that's the easy part you're away from
[7:07] your children they have not woken up and
[7:09] you
[7:12] but what's more
[7:13] interesting is you begin to apply the
[7:16] mindfulness practice into the ordinary
[7:19] things
[7:20] getting a cup of tea
[7:22] you don't need to rush
[7:25] you just get your top cup of tea
[7:27] [Music]
[7:29] you wash your dishes you wash your bowl
[7:31] you don't need to rush to do it
[7:34] you breathe in
[7:35] [Music]
[7:36] and you take your time you put the bowl
[7:38] over
[7:40] you put the dishes you know you're
[7:42] pushing the dishes over you
[7:45] wash the spoon you put the spoon over
[7:48] you see the uh
[7:49] [Music]
[7:51] ordinary it was like what does this have
[7:52] to do with anything
[7:54] about my life
[7:57] and this is what i learned
[7:58] from plum bridge from the early start
[8:01] when i came here
[8:03] it's very challenging because in my mind
[8:05] i thought it was something to get rid of
[8:08] to to to finish and then go do
[8:11] the you know your the real thing
[8:13] whatever is work or practice
[8:17] and so it's a real challenge to uh wash
[8:20] your dishes so this is something
[8:22] i want to just offer to you to
[8:26] use this week
[8:28] to
[8:29] retrain yourself or to train yourself to
[8:32] wash the dishes and your bowl and your
[8:34] spoon in mindfulness
[8:37] and relaxation
[8:38] i mean don't do it like like so
[8:41] like uh like you're practicing that the
[8:44] whole line is looking at you
[8:47] you know be ordinary don't stick out
[8:49] okay just
[8:51] just do it smile enjoy you know the baby
[8:55] buddha can
[8:57] so just
[8:58] don't overdo it okay don't over practice
[9:02] but do it
[9:03] at a leisurely place uh mainly to enjoy
[9:06] it
[9:07] don't rush it
[9:09] so that's one habit that i
[9:11] learned in
[9:13] my
[9:14] early day
[9:15] first coming here to plum village
[9:18] and i also invite you for those who are
[9:21] who are new here or those who
[9:23] have been here before even
[9:26] to look at this week is a a week for you
[9:28] to
[9:31] train a new habit
[9:33] okay
[9:34] so you have a few days here maybe five
[9:37] six days
[9:38] so it's enough time
[9:40] and it could be walking
[9:43] it could be washing the dishes
[9:45] it could be opening the door mindfully
[9:49] right it could be sitting
[9:52] yeah whatever that is sitting still
[9:55] but besides
[9:56] sitting still
[9:57] uh look at your the other parts outside
[10:00] of the
[10:01] meditation hall
[10:03] so use this week to recognize that
[10:06] maybe something uh
[10:08] uh
[10:09] you like to be alone
[10:11] it's a habit you have you're afraid of
[10:13] people or
[10:14] you don't like crowds
[10:16] it might be for you to
[10:19] sit in the near the tea house and just
[10:21] enjoy people
[10:24] you see the the new habit
[10:27] so look at this week to see if there's a
[10:30] habit you recognize that you like to
[10:33] cultivate
[10:35] and this is the mindfulness practice
[10:38] it is not separate
[10:40] from whatever it is you recognize
[10:43] so this is something uh
[10:47] vision for bringing meditation in
[10:51] engage
[10:52] applied meditation
[10:55] this is something
[10:58] like and to invite all of you
[11:02] for this week
[11:04] we will be exploring
[11:06] um
[11:08] three elements that are very important
[11:11] in the
[11:13] buddhist practice
[11:15] they call them uh
[11:16] virtue or powers
[11:19] it's very very important aspect
[11:23] like spiritual power
[11:26] and these three aspects are very this is
[11:28] how we uh
[11:31] qualify or we see the character of a
[11:34] spiritual person like a monk or nun or a
[11:37] teacher or spiritual teacher
[11:39] or in society a leader
[11:43] a member who you know people who are
[11:46] looked up to
[11:48] so these are the elements the we call
[11:50] virtue character
[11:52] or in in buddhist terms we can call them
[11:55] like the power
[11:56] and there's three elements that help us
[12:00] in buddhism we don't look uh like power
[12:02] when you think of power out normally
[12:05] people think of uh
[12:07] wealth
[12:08] fame right or political power
[12:12] these kind of like you're you're in
[12:14] control of some
[12:16] other element below you
[12:18] but in the spiritual training we look it
[12:21] in in terms of uh
[12:23] compassion
[12:25] okay
[12:26] [Music]
[12:28] it's like a
[12:30] compassion love
[12:32] and look is a kind of virtue or power so
[12:36] that's the first
[12:37] kind of thing will
[12:39] one other element will explode this week
[12:42] and the other is wisdom
[12:45] or understanding or insight
[12:48] you see the qualities that make a
[12:51] spiritual
[12:53] person
[12:54] they use these three to kind of praise
[12:56] the buddha and the bodhisattva
[13:00] so compassion wisdom
[13:03] or understanding and insight right
[13:07] these are the three things that help you
[13:09] gauge yourself
[13:12] and the third one we'll explore today is
[13:15] called
[13:16] and that is the power of the virtue of
[13:21] i would say cutting through
[13:24] i remember tai when he first introduced
[13:26] that his hand went like this
[13:28] he cut through
[13:30] it's quite
[13:31] powerful
[13:33] another word uh letting go
[13:36] and what that uh virtue is is your
[13:38] freedom
[13:39] [Music]
[13:40] you see so
[13:42] you qualify a spiritual practitioner by
[13:44] the amount of compassion they have
[13:49] the amount of wisdom they have
[13:52] and the amount of freedom
[13:54] i mean imagine this is the leader of our
[13:57] nation
[13:58] you look and you're like wow
[14:01] so wise
[14:03] so compassionate
[14:06] yeah so free wow
[14:09] what a president
[14:12] yeah
[14:13] and so if you're a part of any
[14:15] organization if you're a leader please
[14:18] reflect on yourself
[14:21] what kind of power do you use
[14:23] is it based on fear
[14:26] is it based on
[14:27] politics your status where you're at
[14:31] so these are the typical power that we
[14:33] learn in school in politics in history
[14:36] right
[14:38] but in as you are a spirit on a
[14:40] spiritual journey now
[14:42] these three qualities is what really uh
[14:46] makes uh or or
[14:49] or breaks right they say in in america
[14:52] it's what makes you or breaks you you
[14:54] don't
[14:56] and you are seeing that now in society
[15:01] the kind of freedom people really have
[15:04] the kind of power
[15:05] so it looks like they have a lot of
[15:07] power
[15:09] but in the end
[15:10] somehow the power became a temptation
[15:14] and
[15:16] it uh
[15:17] becomes a big scandal or a big
[15:20] break
[15:22] so these are things that we have to be
[15:24] aware
[15:25] of so i'll use the board now i'll write
[15:28] for you
[15:49] so the
[15:50] first one is
[15:52] we say
[15:53] um
[15:56] all right vietnamese right this
[15:57] compassion
[16:02] and these are three
[16:05] virtues
[16:09] or
[16:10] power
[16:16] tiduk
[16:26] and then today we'll explore dong look
[16:34] this is um
[16:36] cutting
[16:36] through
[16:42] or we can say
[16:44] freedom
[17:00] in the buddhist practice
[17:02] in normal life we think accumulation is
[17:05] uh
[17:07] what we learn is the um
[17:10] accumulating knowledge
[17:12] accumulating things
[17:14] and
[17:15] that's like what
[17:17] we
[17:18] are taught right
[17:19] in school to learn more
[17:22] in life work so you can have more
[17:26] in the spiritual practice is actually
[17:29] is to release is to eliminate more
[17:33] it's not to accumulate more
[17:35] we even accumulate views
[17:37] in buddhism
[17:39] you remove views
[17:41] you see the
[17:42] the
[17:44] is a very interesting thing so if you're
[17:46] on the practice and you're starting to
[17:47] accumulate a lot of things oh plum
[17:49] village i know them now
[17:51] i get it oh i understand everything
[17:54] about thai's teaching now
[17:56] be careful
[17:57] when you on the line of becoming very
[18:00] dogmatic
[18:02] so you learn it helps you and you let go
[18:05] so the buddhist practice is like
[18:07] medicine
[18:08] it helps us
[18:10] it frees us
[18:12] and then you don't go holding on to it
[18:15] so this is the freedom
[18:18] of cutting off
[18:20] and what are we cutting off
[18:24] mainly
[18:25] the three
[18:27] afflictions the first one is our craving
[18:37] that's just a big term for uh
[18:40] maybe you say craving all you know it's
[18:43] what's so harmful about craving for
[18:45] chocolate is okay
[18:48] you know
[18:48] uh but there's other so it represents a
[18:51] whole class and there are three class
[18:54] that are huge
[18:55] in buddhist
[18:57] practice and i think you know this one
[19:00] is time right in vietnamese
[19:04] and then the sun
[19:08] craving
[19:09] and this will be
[19:11] our
[19:14] anger craving
[19:16] hatred
[19:20] you can say anger sounds more close to
[19:23] us
[19:26] and then our ignorance
[19:36] our wrong views
[19:44] someone who uh
[19:47] craving might be too much for you maybe
[19:49] you don't have craving
[19:50] but you have attachment
[19:52] so anything to do in this category
[19:55] involves uh
[19:57] grabbing
[19:59] it could be chocolate it could be views
[20:02] it could be
[20:03] greed
[20:05] um
[20:06] i notice uh in upper hamlet we it's very
[20:10] subtle huh and this is where mindfulness
[20:12] practice he
[20:14] can help you see stuff
[20:16] the brothers this season just this uh
[20:18] summer retreat for the summer retreat we
[20:21] bought new yellow chairs
[20:23] they're really good
[20:25] high quality yellow chairs
[20:28] and so all of a sudden they appear and
[20:30] they don't look like all the other
[20:31] chairs
[20:32] there's the white one which is like 20
[20:34] years old
[20:36] there's the green one which is about 10
[20:38] years old and then there's the black one
[20:40] which is about five years old
[20:42] and then people know you know ah the
[20:44] yellow chairs
[20:49] and then you know some people are very
[20:51] you know before
[20:53] you know their family gathering for
[20:54] dinner
[20:56] they make sure
[20:58] they get all the yellow chairs
[21:00] or at least someone just put some green
[21:03] ones so it's uh it doesn't look like
[21:05] you're so greedy
[21:08] uh
[21:10] i know that's probably not there's a
[21:12] wrong perception but just in case that's
[21:14] happening with you that's
[21:18] in the category of craving you see
[21:21] it's very subtle huh
[21:23] but this is uh
[21:25] these things are
[21:26] they don't cause a suffering
[21:29] much right this little thing you know
[21:31] chocolate what's
[21:33] but uh
[21:34] if you're careful you uh
[21:37] you'll see the subtlety of it
[21:40] sometimes we're a little stingy pride is
[21:43] also a kind of craving
[21:45] you don't want to admit it you don't
[21:47] want to let them know so you hold on to
[21:49] it
[21:50] you see you don't want to apologize you
[21:52] don't want ah no big deal
[21:55] see it's very subtle so craving it
[21:58] sounds like
[22:00] but there's also
[22:02] stronger ones like urges
[22:05] addictions
[22:06] these are entering into mental
[22:09] illness
[22:11] obsessive obsession
[22:14] neurosis
[22:16] uh what is it the attention
[22:18] this you know
[22:20] kind of like uh
[22:22] so it's a kind of uh
[22:24] it becomes a little bit more
[22:26] most obvious is uh
[22:29] was it sexual craving or lust
[22:33] this is a huge problem right now
[22:36] and
[22:38] it's wonderful that the
[22:41] i guess the
[22:42] people the society is waking up to that
[22:48] a lot of people in power
[22:52] very easily tempted
[22:58] to abuse that power
[23:01] and our craving is the most primal kind
[23:04] of energy that will
[23:06] tempt us
[23:08] this as you see in the news in the last
[23:11] year
[23:12] is really for the good it's a kind of
[23:15] beginning anew for our society to look
[23:17] at the kind of structure we have
[23:20] and the type of uh what we allow
[23:24] and this is not to blame anyone is we
[23:26] are involved as well we have created a
[23:28] society where
[23:30] we water the seed of craving a lot
[23:34] of lusts of uh and so on so this is
[23:38] these are victims
[23:40] people are in place of power
[23:43] that they don't have the spiritual power
[23:46] of letting go of true freedom
[23:49] it looks like they have power
[23:52] but there's something eroding
[23:55] so this is a good way to understand
[23:57] where this fits in
[23:59] as a a spiritual characteristic of a of
[24:03] a person of someone
[24:07] who is on the spiritual path
[24:22] in buddhist practice the uh
[24:24] when we say cutting off
[24:30] there's also a practice of uh
[24:32] equanimity
[24:35] of staying uh
[24:38] mere awareness
[24:40] is a
[24:41] quality of um of love
[24:45] so these things kind of overlap
[24:50] so cutting off is a kind of a kind of
[24:53] freedom of just
[24:54] watching and recognizing things as they
[24:57] are
[24:59] so this is a
[25:01] a hard practice because we're usually in
[25:03] a place um
[25:06] and for parents this is very interesting
[25:08] because you're in a position where you
[25:10] do
[25:12] have uh
[25:13] some relationship to your children to
[25:16] your family
[25:18] so you do have a a little bit of of that
[25:23] but as you know some
[25:24] sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't
[25:27] and so
[25:28] this one's for parents you can practice
[25:31] this also equanimity being aware
[25:34] and we've developed that we call it
[25:36] non-parenting
[25:39] or non
[25:40] you have a relationship with your
[25:42] partner
[25:44] like maybe a couple
[25:46] or a father
[25:48] with a son a mother
[25:50] with a daughter
[25:52] and we
[25:53] learn to be free from that as well
[25:56] so learning to cut
[25:58] and be free
[25:59] from that because you see you you you do
[26:02] the mother thing with your child a lot
[26:05] there's a kind of suffering that you
[26:07] produce for yourself and for the others
[26:12] i don't know if that is very clear
[26:14] but is that it's also a habit
[26:18] the things that we have
[26:20] these
[26:22] uh kind of like make us lose our freedom
[26:25] so we have a
[26:26] we identify with something
[26:30] like we identify that we're in a
[26:31] position
[26:34] you see
[26:35] and therefore we we feel like we have
[26:37] some kind of power over something
[26:40] and this is for me this is a
[26:43] where
[26:44] you have to play with it a little bit
[26:47] you have to
[26:49] not be the parent
[26:51] or not be the boss
[26:55] so this is a kind of letting go of
[26:57] [Music]
[27:00] cutting off that relationship
[27:10] normally when we in society we
[27:14] we run after
[27:15] [Music]
[27:17] you know wealth
[27:18] power
[27:20] fame
[27:22] uh sex
[27:23] these things are related to power
[27:28] and if we don't uh uh
[27:30] you know
[27:31] use the trainings of mindfulness
[27:33] training to really examine
[27:35] what these elements are
[27:37] they all have a hook
[27:40] so this is the the
[27:42] the part here
[27:44] i would
[27:46] remind us that
[27:48] are in the sutra
[27:52] the
[27:53] the temptation
[27:55] like to have wealth
[27:57] is perpetual it never ends there's a
[28:00] hook to it
[28:03] and
[28:04] you lose your freedom that way
[28:09] and then
[28:10] same thing with the sex
[28:12] the pleasure is short
[28:14] but it can
[28:17] become uh like overwhelming or sometimes
[28:21] lead to even perversion
[28:23] so this is the the
[28:25] we must remember this
[28:27] in our society we don't um
[28:32] we don't teach this
[28:34] we don't teach the the danger of uh
[28:38] uh
[28:38] [Music]
[28:40] of these uh the
[28:42] money wealth
[28:44] normally we praise that we we put it on
[28:47] high ground
[28:50] and this is a kind of society that i
[28:52] grew up with
[28:54] and only through
[28:56] the mindfulness practice through
[28:58] stopping and looking
[29:00] at the reality of what this is doing to
[29:02] me
[29:04] making me lose my freedom
[29:06] and that was a a kind of a
[29:09] awakening a wake-up call for me to
[29:12] re-examine my life
[29:17] as a young person i remember thinking uh
[29:20] there was because it's very difficult
[29:23] to do to to let
[29:25] go and
[29:27] i remember having thoughts like god i
[29:29] wish i never met tai
[29:32] or all the practice
[29:34] everybody anybody ever have that thought
[29:37] yeah
[29:38] i was like god my life is so fine until
[29:42] now i have to look at all everything
[29:45] and re-examine everything
[29:47] and this is a challenge this so
[29:50] uh maybe
[29:52] you might want to choose uh you know go
[29:55] somewhere else
[29:57] because this will have you have to look
[29:59] at things
[30:00] that you might want not want to look at
[30:06] and the power of cutting off also
[30:08] includes our
[30:10] our views
[30:14] our views about ourself
[30:16] our views about happiness
[30:22] there's a story in the sutra
[30:24] of a monk who uh
[30:26] [Music]
[30:27] who is in the forest
[30:30] he's sitting meditation and
[30:33] he somehow
[30:34] got a little uh excited and doing his
[30:37] meditation and he yelled out i think
[30:39] some of you know the story i love the
[30:41] story he's just like
[30:43] oh
[30:44] oh wow
[30:46] oh my happiness
[30:48] he's so happy
[30:49] and so the the way he yelled it it
[30:51] disturbed all the other monks
[30:54] and so they thought he went uh kind of
[30:56] maybe local or
[30:59] or something
[31:01] strange you know because uh
[31:03] he yelled it too loud or something
[31:06] and so they uh reported it to the buddha
[31:09] and
[31:10] and then they came and talked to the
[31:12] buddha and they found out later that he
[31:14] was actually a very wealthy man
[31:17] uh before he became a monk
[31:21] uh he was a a like a real a good
[31:24] business person he had
[31:26] you know mansions and so on probably a
[31:29] nice car
[31:31] you know
[31:33] two or three nice cars and
[31:36] a garage with security
[31:38] camera you know
[31:41] i'm skipping time
[31:43] just in case it relates to you
[31:46] yeah
[31:47] and he was uh
[31:49] when he became a monk he
[31:51] released all that
[31:53] he no longer owned a house a car and all
[31:56] these things and
[31:58] he didn't own a bank account
[32:01] he didn't own a credit card
[32:03] he didn't have to go to the atm
[32:05] [Music]
[32:06] every month pay a check to his bank
[32:10] and he got oh my gosh
[32:13] oh what happiness
[32:18] i know that sounds very strange
[32:20] [Music]
[32:21] but this is a lot of us
[32:24] who choose the path of
[32:27] a monastic light
[32:29] we thought you know owning a lot of
[32:31] things especially a bank account
[32:34] was a great happiness especially every
[32:36] month when it the numbers get higher
[32:41] yeah that's the way they you know you're
[32:43] taught right
[32:44] and so uh
[32:46] the power of letting go uh the happiness
[32:49] from letting go
[32:50] please don't do that if you have a
[32:52] family please do you know
[32:55] you know you you please look at your
[32:57] condition
[32:59] so uh don't let go all your cows i would
[33:02] say is a
[33:03] cow releasing cows right
[33:06] so you have to look at what kind of cows
[33:08] you have
[33:09] the physical cow is
[33:12] do you really need all that
[33:15] do you need another
[33:17] car do you need
[33:19] so on
[33:21] so this is the
[33:22] the practice to help us look deeply
[33:26] and how simple our life is because
[33:28] sometimes those things we have idea that
[33:31] they make our life better
[33:33] but it actually takes away our time our
[33:36] quality time with our family with
[33:38] ourselves
[33:40] so please re-examine
[33:47] and releasing cow also the
[33:49] is not just the
[33:51] material things
[33:53] there's also our views
[33:56] our ideas which is very important
[34:02] our ideas about ourself
[34:06] this is a challenge in as we practice
[34:10] we
[34:11] identify ourselves
[34:13] as a certain way
[34:17] and we
[34:18] hang on to that we cling to that
[34:21] and that could might even be a meditator
[34:24] or a
[34:26] spiritual
[34:27] [Music]
[34:28] traveler right
[34:30] so these kind of things are like traps
[34:35] so the power of uh stopping and looking
[34:37] at ourselves
[34:39] if you're still enough
[34:42] you can begin to see the little
[34:44] subtleties of uh your uh yeah what you
[34:49] you view yourself you brand yourself you
[34:51] uh box yourself in
[34:54] and this is uh not cause uh how is
[34:57] preventing you it's an obstacle to your
[34:59] freedom
[35:07] we also have views about other people
[35:11] our father our mother our loved ones
[35:14] our brothers and sister
[35:17] and they become an obstacle because
[35:19] we're not able to let them go
[35:22] so the practice is to recognize
[35:26] to calm
[35:28] to look deeply
[35:31] and to let go
[35:33] you know the 16 exercises the thai
[35:36] teaches
[35:38] often
[35:40] the last four involves letting go
[35:45] not that it's like accumulative right
[35:47] but it is very important uh one is
[35:50] non-desire and one is letting go
[35:54] and so when we begin to look at
[35:55] ourselves and look at the nature of
[35:57] reality
[35:59] the things you that we're attached to we
[36:01] want to protect
[36:03] you know
[36:05] this is a
[36:07] a tendency we have and things that we
[36:10] don't want
[36:13] things that we don't have we crave for
[36:16] the things we have
[36:18] we
[36:19] are insecure about
[36:22] so identify these things because they
[36:24] will relate to your freedom
[36:31] i'll tell you another
[36:32] funny story in the monastic area
[36:35] when christmas all the brothers got cups
[36:38] i like to tell this one because it it's
[36:40] still happening and they have our names
[36:43] on them you know those cups that we
[36:45] drink these cups
[36:47] you know they don't have a a
[36:50] identifier they didn't have any markings
[36:53] when i was first here ty just has them
[36:56] and they're all the same
[36:58] you know and then
[37:00] this one says bao yum on it
[37:02] but some sister learned how to encrave
[37:04] or some brothers and they engraved our
[37:07] name on them on our on these cups before
[37:12] you know the brothers whoever have the
[37:13] cup in the rooms okay you take it you go
[37:16] in the room it's fine and it just goes
[37:18] around and eventually it all
[37:20] equals out
[37:21] but as someone
[37:23] for one christmas gave each brother a
[37:26] cup with our name on it
[37:29] you know so now you go into other rooms
[37:31] and you kind of see oh
[37:33] that's my name on it
[37:38] you know
[37:39] and then before no problem right
[37:41] you know but now it has my name on it
[37:43] and like
[37:44] how did i get here
[37:46] it should be my room
[37:48] you know same thing with the chair you
[37:50] know
[37:50] so it's very interesting you see
[37:52] identity
[37:53] yourself yeah i am bob
[37:57] i am michelle
[37:59] you say something about michelle i don't
[38:01] like
[38:02] i get hurt
[38:08] so this is uh our views are very
[38:10] interesting
[38:12] and if you're on the path this is all
[38:14] fun okay so don't make it too serious
[38:19] another view we have that we won't let
[38:21] go is uh our suffering
[38:25] where some of us
[38:29] might be might be in the habit of
[38:33] making ourselves suffer or watering that
[38:36] seed
[38:38] so we have to be careful
[38:40] that
[38:41] [Music]
[38:42] some of us
[38:44] we tend to want to be there
[38:47] or we
[38:48] we can't handle a month without drama
[38:53] so it could be a habit of yours
[38:56] so how to be still how to be
[39:00] not
[39:01] be too disturbed
[39:03] this is
[39:04] cutting off
[39:07] why do i have a habit of always being
[39:09] involved in some kind of drama
[39:12] every month it is a new object
[39:15] this month is this person next month is
[39:17] that situation
[39:19] so this is uh
[39:20] the practice of cutting off
[39:24] cutting off our habits our views
[39:26] our things letting go
[39:29] and the more we let go
[39:33] the more freedom we have and that is the
[39:35] power of
[39:37] long look
[39:39] you understand why that is value
[39:42] is your freedom
[39:45] and in buddhism that is very high it's
[39:48] not about whether you're happy joyful or
[39:52] it's freedom and peace
[39:54] are you able to be
[39:58] in the front of suffering
[40:00] to be free
[40:02] and then you
[40:04] are able
[40:05] and be in a position to help
[40:08] if you're not a free person you will be
[40:10] pulled in
[40:12] and the drama and you have you lose your
[40:15] stability
[40:16] that's why freedom and equanimity is
[40:20] very
[40:21] pretty high up there much more than
[40:23] happiness i would say
[40:25] is uh you know you go to joy happiness
[40:28] and then there's peace
[40:31] peace in front of happiness or suffering
[40:38] there's compassion
[40:40] you see
[40:41] so don't just look for oh i'm happy or
[40:44] i'm suffering oh i'm happy i'm suffering
[40:48] you know
[40:50] it's there those are the elements but
[40:52] look also okay i am suffering
[40:58] can i be at peace with it
[41:00] can i be calm
[41:02] can i be free
[41:04] in the face of suffering
[41:06] your child is crying
[41:09] don't let that suck you in just
[41:16] then you're able to help your child
[41:18] or else you would just perpetuate
[41:23] what is it that relationship
[41:26] this is uh an observation
[41:28] so we need to learn how to be with each
[41:31] other
[41:32] to actually offer a kind of freedom
[41:36] a kind of fearlessness in front of
[41:38] suffering in front of
[41:40] obstacles and things
[41:44] so the power of
[41:46] cutting off is a an element that we can
[41:49] cultivate
[41:51] and we cultivate that
[41:52] with the present moment of mere
[41:55] awareness
[41:56] first huh so you stay still
[41:59] you take you train yourself to breathe
[42:02] in the front of a craving a front in
[42:05] front of a uh
[42:07] a things a habit that's stunning you
[42:09] just breathe
[42:11] and you watch
[42:12] and you slowly train in that the calm
[42:15] and look at it
[42:18] so that's the power of
[42:20] [Music]
[42:21] letting go
[42:38] so
[42:44] god
[42:57] [Music]
[43:04] so
[43:05] [Music]
[43:35] uh
[43:50] ah
[44:07] sort of like a tree or a nice haircut
[44:14] next
[44:17] topic i share with you that might be
[44:19] helpful for you to uh
[44:22] as you practice is
[44:25] two
[44:26] element we call the
[44:28] [Music]
[44:31] vietnamese it's called
[44:38] which is kind of like your uh
[44:42] your uh
[44:45] they say nature your nature
[44:48] or more technical is the
[44:51] our main
[44:53] retribution these are technical
[44:56] but what it uh explain
[44:58] that it is uh it's basically your body
[45:01] and mind it's your individual
[45:07] your five scandals
[45:12] it's your what
[45:14] your parents your ancestors have
[45:17] um
[45:19] i've given you
[45:20] you've given you this life this body
[45:22] this uh mind
[45:25] and uh you're a particular way where
[45:28] whether you like it or not you're very
[45:29] similar to your mother and your father
[45:34] some of us don't want to admit it
[45:36] but slowly as you get older you probably
[45:38] recognize it
[45:40] yesterday
[45:42] in
[45:43] our lunch or dinner
[45:45] lunch lunchtime we introduce ourselves
[45:47] and each one had to say one habit
[45:50] that we have of our mother
[45:52] and one habit that we have of our father
[45:55] our father
[45:57] and then the person that went first he
[46:00] uh he listed a few
[46:02] i only asked one but you you get excited
[46:05] and you
[46:09] and so this is the kind of things so
[46:11] they've only not has given us their
[46:13] genes the two chromosomes each
[46:17] right but they've also
[46:19] given us a little bit of their character
[46:22] like i said that i have a quality of my
[46:25] uh my mother being very
[46:28] like social
[46:29] she will meet strangers and we would be
[46:32] so embarrassed like we would walk
[46:34] anywhere my mother would like just make
[46:36] friends with anybody and as kids we were
[46:39] like ah mom
[46:42] would embarrass us as children you know
[46:44] because she's uh she has that ability to
[46:47] treat everyone kind of like like best
[46:49] friends you know i was like ah no not
[46:52] here not here no
[46:55] and i recognize i kind of have i do that
[46:58] with especially with babies i think
[47:00] everybody's baby is mine you know i take
[47:02] them
[47:04] and the mother is like
[47:05] yeah and i put them on the tree and
[47:11] my mom was like oh no
[47:14] she's playing to say something because
[47:16] maybe i'm a monk or something
[47:19] not my baby
[47:21] so i have that quality of my mother
[47:23] and my father i have his creativity well
[47:29] sort of my father
[47:31] but this is uh something that is very
[47:34] helpful
[47:36] very helpful in my practice
[47:38] because sometime now when i cook
[47:43] or when i do something
[47:45] like i sow my clothing
[47:47] i think of my
[47:51] grandma and she's in me
[47:54] yeah and he's wonderful so you begin to
[47:56] do things
[47:58] with this in mind this is uh
[48:01] your
[48:02] um what
[48:03] you're continuing on them there's
[48:05] another aspect
[48:07] he called uh
[48:11] a bao
[48:14] and this is kind of in uh i guess in
[48:18] science they call nurture right our
[48:21] environment
[48:22] this is the environment
[48:29] as retribution
[48:40] and see
[48:42] the tree the
[48:44] vision of the tree is very helpful to us
[48:46] we are each like a living organism
[48:50] and we're interacting
[48:52] with the environment we're a particular
[48:54] kind of tree we could be a pear an apple
[48:58] but each one of us is interacting so
[49:00] this is a wonderful way to uh
[49:04] see yourself as a kind of a
[49:08] interacting
[49:09] system
[49:11] and one way we interact with the world
[49:13] is through our
[49:14] [Music]
[49:15] thoughts
[49:20] you know like maybe
[49:23] our speech
[49:29] and our bodily action
[49:36] this helps us
[49:38] become more aware when we say
[49:41] uh
[49:42] practicing mindfulness is not just
[49:46] you know
[49:48] doing things
[49:49] mindfully but also we become mindful of
[49:52] our speech
[49:55] mindful of our listening mindful
[49:57] listening
[49:58] you see what the how the words coming in
[50:01] affect us
[50:02] so these are ways that uh we interact we
[50:06] uh continue ourselves
[50:10] our speech it could be like leaves
[50:12] [Music]
[50:14] action more fruit
[50:16] so this is what we uh
[50:18] we give out right
[50:21] and the environment is what
[50:23] is uh
[50:25] affecting us
[50:26] and the environment here how we get
[50:28] nourished we can
[50:30] uh remember help us remember is the four
[50:32] nutriments
[50:41] edible foods
[50:45] i'll just i won't go over this in detail
[50:47] but just for you a sense impression
[50:57] our volition
[51:00] and our consciousness
[51:17] so this is kind of like the output
[51:20] how we interact how we affect how we
[51:23] continue ourselves
[51:25] i think one of the gotha be uh
[51:28] to reflect on uh about oh age sickness
[51:32] and death
[51:33] that the only thing you
[51:35] can you know that will continue you when
[51:37] you die is your these energies
[51:41] so it's very helpful to begin to see
[51:43] your practice as these things
[51:46] is what you give out
[51:48] your action is very obvious right your
[51:50] speech
[51:52] but also your thought
[51:55] as an energy
[51:57] and i think that's the as you practice
[52:00] more and especially watch that in
[52:02] dharma discussion this week
[52:06] this is uh happening a lot in uh dharma
[52:09] discussion how you listen
[52:11] and what you sp talk about
[52:14] while you're listening
[52:17] there are thoughts triggering
[52:19] so this is a way we interact and give
[52:22] out output
[52:23] and these things are the things that
[52:27] input
[52:28] the energy the things we eat the drink
[52:31] the things we watch
[52:33] hear
[52:35] and think you know
[52:38] see in the news internet and so on
[52:41] our volition our spiritual uh it's like
[52:44] our our will our desire
[52:47] and then consciousness
[52:50] which is kind of
[52:51] an individual this individual
[52:53] consciousness
[52:59] i hope this is not uh
[53:04] this is quite
[53:06] i don't know it's okay for
[53:08] first day
[53:14] and then our collective
[53:21] so our individual consciousness and our
[53:24] collective consciousness
[53:26] so this is a way we can
[53:29] begin to be more mindful when you
[53:31] practice mindfulness
[53:33] is this is what you're
[53:36] being mindful of
[53:38] what's happening inside
[53:41] and what's happening around you
[53:44] so this is a way to look at it
[53:48] is something
[53:49] upsetting in the stomach
[53:53] what did i eat today
[53:56] right
[53:58] something uh restless in my body
[54:02] what have i been paying attention
[54:05] with in my thought
[54:07] you see so this is a way to study
[54:10] yourself to deep look
[54:12] deep looking
[54:14] this is what you're looking at
[54:16] output
[54:17] input
[54:18] so when you're mindful
[54:23] so the practice of mindfulness help us
[54:26] uh
[54:27] come back to the present moment
[54:29] while we're walking while we're washing
[54:31] the dishes and in each moment if we can
[54:34] maintain the concentration
[54:37] we can be aware of what is happening in
[54:39] the present moment
[54:42] so it's very base crucial
[54:45] that it's established on the
[54:48] present moment
[54:50] that i'm washing dishes
[54:54] and you recognize a family come with the
[54:56] children
[54:59] then a thought comes up like um
[55:02] [Music]
[55:03] something
[55:04] something bothered you you know
[55:07] yeah you recognize huh okay and you come
[55:09] back to the dishes
[55:12] right
[55:13] you move over because you're present
[55:16] you're aware of what's happening within
[55:18] you and without you so this is a
[55:22] a way of looking
[55:25] another way of uh
[55:28] describing the relationship
[55:30] is uh
[55:34] is this is
[55:35] our individual
[55:41] and this is the environment
[55:46] and there's a relationship
[55:49] so we have to be aware of that
[55:52] especially if we're moving from
[55:54] environment here you come to plum
[55:56] village
[55:58] the environment here is different
[56:01] and you have to know how it affects you
[56:03] and i think you know how it affects you
[56:05] some of you arrived the other day
[56:08] how many you felt something changing in
[56:10] your consciousness
[56:12] you know like uh
[56:14] all of a sudden
[56:17] yeah when i go on tour with the brothers
[56:20] and the sisters and i come back to plum
[56:22] village
[56:23] that is the first thing i i recognize
[56:29] yeah so much stimulation outside
[56:33] and you have to be aware of this not
[56:34] that we need to run away from
[56:37] the city and the
[56:39] the stimulation
[56:40] but we need to be trained ourselves to
[56:43] recognize
[56:45] this interaction
[56:48] with the environment and how it affects
[56:50] us
[56:54] so that's mindfulness you're aware what
[56:57] is happening in your surroundings
[57:01] and so we're aware of the
[57:03] the non so you're aware of yourself
[57:06] your five scandals
[57:08] your body your feelings your perception
[57:11] your mental formation your consciousness
[57:15] that's
[57:17] if you're a practitioner this is
[57:21] your training to always keep this in
[57:23] mind
[57:24] how's my body doing how's my feelings
[57:29] how's my emotions right how am i
[57:31] perceiving things
[57:34] am i having mental formations what kind
[57:36] of mental formations am i having am i
[57:38] angry
[57:39] am i resentful am i holding a grudge
[57:43] am i irritable right now
[57:46] am i angry
[57:48] so you begin to
[57:51] i think this many of you
[57:53] are doing that
[57:59] there's another person here
[58:03] so the individual and the environment
[58:06] is very linked
[58:09] so a
[58:12] person a person b they share the same
[58:15] environment
[58:17] but they also
[58:19] are have their own
[58:21] uh nature right their own
[58:24] individual uh
[58:26] uh
[58:27] rich
[58:28] retribution right they each are their
[58:30] own self and they're also each other's
[58:32] environment so
[58:34] were
[58:36] at one time we're ourselves and we are
[58:38] also other people's environment
[58:41] this is very important to know as you uh
[58:44] that's why we encourage so many people
[58:45] to build sangha to build community
[58:48] it's very important to have someone
[58:52] walking mindfully and enjoying my
[58:54] mindfully
[58:57] or eating silently in the morning
[58:59] breakfast and you're eating breakfast
[59:02] and you see the other person with their
[59:03] family eating
[59:05] that becomes your
[59:07] nourishment
[59:10] [Music]
[59:11] so in a way we are helping each other as
[59:14] a collective to create
[59:16] an environment
[59:18] that actually waters and nourishes all
[59:21] the good
[59:23] so we each have a responsibility to take
[59:26] care of ourselves
[59:28] and our practice and when we do that and
[59:31] we're enjoying it and happy with it at
[59:34] peace calm non-reactive
[59:37] we are also
[59:39] affecting the other people that's very
[59:42] obvious right
[59:53] so as a a person
[59:55] um
[59:57] maybe in the media or in a position to
[1:00:00] create environment maybe you're ahead of
[1:00:02] a company
[1:00:04] please uh
[1:00:05] look at that
[1:00:07] be how to set up your environment
[1:00:10] so that it is uh
[1:00:12] nourishing for everyone
[1:00:16] so this is a kind of uh if you're in
[1:00:18] that position please uh be aware of that
[1:00:21] in our society now there's a
[1:00:26] we don't pay attention to that enough
[1:00:29] i think we value
[1:00:31] freedom too much
[1:00:33] in terms of freedom to
[1:00:35] you know especially freedom of uh
[1:00:38] expression freedom in media
[1:00:41] in movies
[1:00:43] and the internet
[1:00:45] and and so on so these kind of uh it
[1:00:48] creates a environment
[1:00:50] that is watering maybe the wrong seeds
[1:00:55] you know recently uh i was on net
[1:00:58] and i was looking for uh how to fix a
[1:01:01] telescope
[1:01:03] because it was broken in our storage
[1:01:06] and i went on to internet to see how to
[1:01:08] fix it to realign it because there was a
[1:01:12] blood moon
[1:01:13] a couple of
[1:01:14] so i was fixing and i went to internet
[1:01:16] to figure out and then they actually had
[1:01:18] the a video of someone fixing that same
[1:01:22] telescope and how to realign
[1:01:25] and then the day afterwards i went
[1:01:28] online
[1:01:30] and
[1:01:31] i think you know this already but it was
[1:01:33] really scary
[1:01:35] like i started seeing all kinds of
[1:01:37] telescope advertisement
[1:01:40] um
[1:01:41] everywhere i look i look i i tried like
[1:01:43] duck duck look is it look
[1:01:45] another
[1:01:46] browser
[1:01:48] and everywhere it was like a telescope
[1:01:51] and i'm like wow i mean i heard about it
[1:01:54] but this is the first time it happened
[1:01:55] to me
[1:01:57] and
[1:01:58] it's quite uh
[1:02:00] luckily
[1:02:01] i didn't have any money you know
[1:02:05] i don't have a credit card so i'm a
[1:02:07] little bit more uh protected
[1:02:12] so we we need to look at this for our
[1:02:14] children especially
[1:02:16] and our schools
[1:02:19] and if you're in media please really
[1:02:22] look at this
[1:02:24] uh when we write an article what are we
[1:02:27] creating
[1:02:30] so this is a very important um
[1:02:34] that we know
[1:02:35] our purpose
[1:02:37] what is the most important thing
[1:02:40] what i would call our ultimate concern
[1:02:43] our freedom our compassion
[1:02:46] our wisdom our kindness so we write we
[1:02:50] we create an environment where these
[1:02:52] seeds
[1:02:53] are water
[1:02:55] this is
[1:02:57] all it is we don't need to
[1:02:59] you know
[1:03:01] get enlightened or whatever but as a
[1:03:03] collective we all can contribute
[1:03:06] to creating an environment like this
[1:03:09] where we can take care of our suffering
[1:03:11] we have time
[1:03:12] to be and learn how to suffer and be
[1:03:15] with our suffering and not run away with
[1:03:17] from our suffering
[1:03:20] so this is a a task
[1:03:23] but mostly our society now
[1:03:26] it's watering uh
[1:03:28] our our greed right our want our desire
[1:03:33] so as plum village you come here you you
[1:03:36] feel that
[1:03:38] um here
[1:03:40] you know we don't water much of your
[1:03:42] seed of uh
[1:03:44] competition
[1:03:44] [Music]
[1:03:46] or last week we had a soccer game watch
[1:03:49] world cup
[1:03:51] we were quite rooting for the french
[1:03:54] so that was like a rare moment of
[1:03:57] actually uh uh actually choosing a side
[1:04:00] just for fun you know we watched it you
[1:04:02] know and the kids are gone you know
[1:04:05] but most of the most of the thing we try
[1:04:08] to keep it
[1:04:09] so that you can take a break from that
[1:04:12] right
[1:04:13] and there's not a lot of uh
[1:04:16] you know uh violent and and hurtful
[1:04:19] things here so you take a break
[1:04:22] and we create an environment for you to
[1:04:24] not be distracted
[1:04:27] i see that's thai's a main intention
[1:04:31] you know a lazy day is uh for you to be
[1:04:34] with yourself and to be with your family
[1:04:36] to be with your loved ones
[1:04:39] it's not to be distracted
[1:04:41] um
[1:04:42] as we envision plum village
[1:04:45] maybe growing
[1:04:45] [Music]
[1:04:47] maybe needing more rooms and more places
[1:04:50] every year that we have to turn down so
[1:04:52] many families because they cannot come
[1:04:56] because we no more room
[1:04:58] and we have to put a limit because of
[1:05:00] our our system we have
[1:05:03] but then
[1:05:04] you know as we grow how do we want to
[1:05:06] grow plum village
[1:05:09] should we have a swimming pool with
[1:05:11] slides
[1:05:13] maybe uh you know
[1:05:15] one of those rides and you go fast and
[1:05:17] get excited
[1:05:19] and then maybe a shooting range
[1:05:23] uh you know entertainment you know a
[1:05:26] vacation place
[1:05:28] you know do you see this as your
[1:05:29] vacation to go do that
[1:05:32] we don't have anything for you to do
[1:05:33] here just sit around and
[1:05:35] and look at the flowers right
[1:05:38] wash your dishes
[1:05:40] lay on the grass
[1:05:42] if you're lucky you have a hammock
[1:05:45] yeah
[1:05:47] so this is not an attraction place this
[1:05:50] place is not here to get you to do
[1:05:53] something
[1:05:54] but it's here for you to learn how to be
[1:05:57] this alive
[1:05:59] that tree doesn't need to be more than
[1:06:02] the
[1:06:03] tree the tree just needs to be a tree
[1:06:09] but our society asks us to always be
[1:06:12] more right
[1:06:14] can we just be
[1:06:16] [Music]
[1:06:17] human can we just be
[1:06:21] uh who we are where we're at
[1:06:25] this is uh a question for our ourselves
[1:06:28] as we set up our
[1:06:31] and society
[1:06:32] know this is
[1:06:34] some of you are thinking well
[1:06:36] and it's great for you you live in plum
[1:06:38] village
[1:06:39] some people have said that to me
[1:06:42] and but we need to help
[1:06:44] we need to create a sangha we need to go
[1:06:47] back and
[1:06:48] practice so that we have that kind of
[1:06:50] freedom
[1:06:52] that we can be a refuge for other people
[1:06:55] and create a little community
[1:06:57] environment
[1:06:59] where uh as a collective we know what is
[1:07:02] important
[1:07:04] so this is uh
[1:07:06] for me the most noble thing to do
[1:07:10] for us to practice
[1:07:12] to transform ourselves and then help
[1:07:15] other people
[1:07:16] gather people
[1:07:20] so we hope you uh have a wonderful week
[1:07:28] please uh
[1:07:29] um
[1:07:29] [Music]
[1:07:30] don't
[1:07:31] be more kind to yourself
[1:07:35] don't demand yourself too much
[1:07:38] just take it easy
[1:07:41] you're on this path for uh
[1:07:44] you know to see it as there's more to
[1:07:46] you know take your time
[1:07:49] so please don't be uh too uh harsh on
[1:07:52] yourself
[1:07:53] some of you come here with uh certain
[1:07:56] pain certain suffering
[1:07:58] learn to be with it
[1:08:01] learn another way to be with it
[1:08:05] and
[1:08:07] be more
[1:08:09] gentle with yourself
[1:08:11] learn to love yourself
[1:08:15] some of us we
[1:08:17] we try to heart
[1:08:19] from the way we raise from our family
[1:08:22] from our society
[1:08:25] and that can sometimes come into the
[1:08:28] practice
[1:08:29] so please uh
[1:08:32] if you need to find a place
[1:08:35] and sit with yourself
[1:08:37] find a spot in the forest
[1:08:40] learn to be with yourself to
[1:08:43] be with your suffering
[1:08:45] as one aspect
[1:08:47] and the other aspect
[1:08:49] also nourish yourself with joy
[1:08:53] this is the secret
[1:08:55] it's not all suffering it's not all
[1:08:57] about suffering and suffering is not
[1:08:59] enough
[1:09:01] there's more to life you're alive
[1:09:05] you have healthy lungs you're breathing
[1:09:07] your eyes are
[1:09:08] in good condition
[1:09:10] so we also trained to
[1:09:13] re-uh we said
[1:09:15] change the habit to not look for the big
[1:09:18] happiness or the enlightenment all these
[1:09:20] great kind of big things
[1:09:22] but like simply like
[1:09:26] my eyes are in good condition
[1:09:31] i have the time to wash dishes
[1:09:36] yeah and some people don't have time huh
[1:09:39] that's what it means no you have the
[1:09:41] time to take a walk slowly in the forest
[1:09:46] so look at the ordinary things
[1:09:48] the simple things that you
[1:09:51] forgotten
[1:09:53] so this is a new habit
[1:09:55] tai has a poem about
[1:09:57] we have a diamond in our pocket but we
[1:09:59] don't know and we think we are very poor
[1:10:03] and always running
[1:10:05] and always in need
[1:10:08] but we have we are the richest person
[1:10:12] on earth and we don't know
[1:10:15] and that's what it means it means
[1:10:17] you're alive
[1:10:19] you can see the moon at night
[1:10:23] you see the stars
[1:10:26] so please
[1:10:28] make the time for that to nourish
[1:10:30] yourself
[1:10:32] with nature
[1:10:34] with your breath
[1:10:36] with stillness
[1:10:39] it's quiet
[1:10:42] and this will give you the energy to
[1:10:46] be with the pain be with your challenges
[1:10:51] so we hope you uh
[1:10:53] uh have uh success and
[1:10:56] put your whole uh
[1:10:58] heart into the practice
[1:11:01] thank you
