Alex Grey

Alex Grey, born in 1953, is a painter and spiritual teacher whose anatomical visionary art has become a visual language for contemporary mysticism. Working across painting, sculpture, and installation, Grey creates images that render the nervous system, chakras, and luminous body as a unified map of human consciousness—bridging medical illustration, religious iconography, and psychedelic phenomenology.

Grey's work emerges from a lineage that includes both Western anatomy and Eastern tantric philosophy. His signature technique layers translucent figures to show skeleton, musculature, organs, and energy meridians in a single composition, creating what he calls the "Sacred Mirrors"—paintings that function as aids to meditation and self-recognition. This approach distinguishes his practice from contemporary visionary artists by rooting it in anatomical specificity rather than abstraction, and from spiritual art traditions by insisting on direct, unmediated vision rather than symbolism alone.

His major works include the Sacred Mirrors series (begun in 1979), which depicts the full spectrum of human anatomy and consciousness across dozens of large-scale canvases; Transfiguration (1993), a monumental work installed in his chapel; and the illustrated book *The Mission of Art* (1998), which articulates his philosophy of visionary practice as spiritual discipline. His writings and teachings have been collected in books including *Art Psalms* and films documenting his process and theology.

Grey came to visionary art through a near-death experience in 1975, when a suicide attempt and subsequent resuscitation fundamentally altered his perception of embodied consciousness. He studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, then moved to New York, where he spent years in the East Village art scene while deepening his study of Tantric Buddhism, Vipassana meditation, and Kabbalah. The convergence of these practices—mystical study and direct artistic labor—became the foundation of his life's work.

His impact is measured in the tens of thousands of people who have meditated within CoSM (the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors), which he and his wife Allyson opened in Manhattan in 2000 and later relocated upstate. His paintings have been exhibited at major museums including the New Museum, the Venice Biennale, and institutions across Europe and Asia. His work has been documented in numerous monographs and featured in publications like *Art in America* and *The New Yorker*. CoSM functions as both artist studio and functioning temple, hosting monthly full-moon meditations, artist residencies, and workshops in visionary consciousness.

Grey continues to paint, teach, and develop CoSM as a living archive of visionary practice and contemporary sacred art. Recent work includes large-scale paintings exploring the divine light within organic forms, as well as ongoing collaborations with meditation teachers and neuroscientists investigating the phenomenology of visionary perception. He maintains a rigorous personal practice of meditation and artistic discipline, treating the studio as a place of spiritual work rather than aesthetic production alone.

For contemporary seekers and artists alike, Grey's practice offers a model of how direct experience, rigorous study, and skilled craftsmanship can converge in a single life's dedication to rendering the invisible visible.
