Marya Stark is a musician and artist whose work is devoted to the waters of the world. Her site gathers music, poetry, lyrics, media and a number of projects and collaborations, including She Rose, Starling Arrow and Stark Levity.
Her first ambient album project, Underground River, was co-composed with her longtime friend and collaborator Daniel Berkman. She describes it as a 15-year process with the waters of the world, shaped by chasing waterfalls, exploring hot springs, praying at streams and rivers, and listening for what she calls the original songs of the elemental devas. The work grew from a dream of being a water spirit, and from 2021, a period of deep grief when making art in her usual form felt difficult. She turned to wordless sound as a way to move emotion through the body, and the result is an impressionistic soundscape of the emotional landscape of the underground river.
Underground River also includes a short ceremonial dance film made with Earthbased Media, a listening guide and ritual manual, and cover art, Water Deva, painted by Danielle Caners from Marya's dream. She offers the album as a prayer to and for the waters of the world and of our bodies, and hopes it can accompany a morning practice or a quiet bath. She says the work has led her to collaborate with hundreds of people in honor of the planet's waters.

Worth Knowing
Marya Stark is a meditation teacher, musician, and sound healer whose practice centers on a 15-year devotional relationship with the waters of the world. Her work weaves together guided meditation, sacred music, voice healing, and movement—often rooted in a practice of listening to what she describes as 'the original songs of the elemental devas.' She's best known for her ambient album Underground River, a wordless offering co-composed with Daniel Berkman that emerged from a period of deep grief and a dream of being a water spirit. What draws people to her work is the specificity of her devotion: listeners aren't encountering generic wellness content, but rather an artist who has chased waterfalls, explored hot springs, and prayed at rivers to understand how elemental consciousness speaks through sound. Her recent albums—including Mâtîrja (Ancestral Mothers), Kaleidoscope, and Faery Wheel—show an artist continuously expanding her range across sound healing, sacred chant, and spiritual teaching. She has collaborated with hundreds of artists, filmmakers, and meditation practitioners in service of honoring the planet's waters and the inner landscape of the body.
