What Are Hypogeous Fungi?

Hypogeous fungi are mushrooms that fruit entirely underground, unlike the visible mushrooms most people recognize. In the footage, Stamets identifies small, puffball-like fruiting bodies—described as "very very small" and fragile—that squirrels were actively digging to access. These underground fungi are mycorrhizal mushrooms, meaning they grow in symbiotic relationship with tree roots. They require specific moisture, darkness, and soil conditions to thrive, making them most abundant in old-growth forests where undisturbed soil and mature tree networks create ideal habitat.

These fruiting bodies are not accidental; they represent a conscious survival strategy by the fungal mycelium (the vast network of threads living in the soil). By fruiting underground, the fungi protect their spores from weather extremes and UV damage while advertising their location through scent—which is precisely why squirrels, with their keen sense of smell, are attracted to them. Stamets emphasizes that "the mushrooms are very scentful," suggesting the fungi have evolved to be detectable to their primary dispersers.

How Do Squirrels Fit Into the Forest Food Web?

The spotted owl's survival depends on hunting flying squirrels and other small rodents. Flying squirrels and regular squirrels consume hypogeous fungi as a primary food source. By eating these underground mushrooms, squirrels obtain dense nutrition and simultaneously become the vector by which fungal spores spread across the forest floor. When a squirrel consumes a truffle, it digests the fruiting body but the spores pass through intact, exiting in the squirrel's feces—which Stamets describes as "very nutritious." This nutrient-rich droppings become ideal germination sites for the spores, allowing the fungal network to expand to new locations.

This relationship illustrates a critical principle: the entire food chain from soil-dwelling fungi to apex predators is fungal-dependent. The spotted owl, an indicator species for old-growth forest health, cannot exist without flying squirrels. Flying squirrels cannot survive without the caloric density of hypogeous fungi. And fungi cannot disperse or maintain their networks without mammals. Stamets frames this explicitly: "it shows you how important fungi are for the old growth forest and especially for indicator species."

Why Are Mammals Universally Attracted to Fungi?

Stamets makes a bold claim: "not only humans are attracted to mushrooms but most mammals are." This is not incidental preference but evolutionary necessity. Mushrooms contain up to 40% protein, an exceptionally high concentration compared to many plant foods. Stamets describes this encounter as potentially "the only wild footage in the past two decades—or ever—of a squirrel digging up truffle." Most wildlife documentation either focuses on above-ground fungal fruiting or large mammals; capturing a small wild squirrel actively excavating an underground truffle in its native habitat is extraordinarily rare. The footage required chance encounter, quick reflexes (Stamets instructed the filmmaker David Springbett to immediately stop and film), and professional equipment on hand.

This rarity reflects a deeper reality: hypogeous fungi and their dispersers operate largely hidden from human observation. The fungi fruit underground. The squirrels hunt them silently and selectively. The spore dispersal happens inside animal bodies. Most of the ecological relationships that sustain old-growth forests occur in darkness and soil, invisible to casual observers. Accidental documentation of this process offers genuine scientific and educational value.

Understanding the role of hypogeous fungi reshapes how we think about forest conservation. Protecting old-growth forests is not merely about saving trees; it is about preserving the fungal networks that trees depend on, the squirrels that depend on fungi, and the predators that depend on squirrels. Logging, soil disturbance, or monoculture replanting destroys both the visible ecosystem and the invisible fungal infrastructure that holds it together. [1:03] and so um hypo fungi are Subterranean

[1:07] mushrooms and they're like little puff

[1:09] balls and here they he took uh one of

[1:12] them and here is another one it's very

[1:16] very small but these are micro risal

[1:18] mushrooms they grow in association of

[1:20] the roots of trees and um these hypo

[1:24] fungi are very important for squirrels

[1:26] especially for f flying squirrels and

[1:28] it's part of the food chain that leads

[1:30] to the spotted owl the spotted owl is a

[1:33] Predator against the flying squirrel and

[1:35] the flying and the Flying Squirrels and

[1:37] Other squirrels consume hypogeous fungi

[1:39] so the entire food chain leads up to the

[1:41] spoted DA it shows you how important

[1:43] fungi are for the old growth forest and

[1:45] especially for indicator species in the

[1:47] ow

[1:59] Forest oh yeah

[2:01] uh inside this is um there's a spore

[2:03] producing layer all on the inside and so

[2:06] when these things are popped open they

[2:08] consume them but the spores then goes

[2:10] through the squirrel's gut and so the

[2:13] squirrel pellet or squir squirrel poop

[2:16] then uh when it plates on the ground

[2:18] becomes a uh site where the spores then

[2:20] germinate because they have a little

[2:21] feal pellet and it's very nutritious and

[2:24] this is one way these hypogeous fungi

[2:26] spread themselves is using squirrels and

[2:28] mammals so not only humans are attracted

[2:30] to mushrooms but most mammals are I

[2:33] would dare say uh from bears you know to

[2:37] uh all sorts of other um you know

[2:39] quadraped and bipedal mammals uh engage

[2:42] fungi as a food

[2:47] source

[2:49] nutrition oh it's pretty substantial

[2:52] mushrooms have up to 40%

[2:54] protein

[2:56] um and they're very high in vitamin B

[2:59] complexes um and also um upon exposure

[3:04] to sunlight they produce vitamin D which
