Hanuman Maui Presents: A Bhaktimala for Ram Dass by Krishna Das: A Listening Guide

Where It Sits in Krishna Das's Arc

Krishna Das, born Jeffrey Kagel in 1947, has spent decades carrying the teachings of his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, into Western rooms through call-and-response chanting. Most of his albums are studio statements, built as arcs with deliberate arrangements. Hanuman Maui Presents: A Bhaktimala for Ram Dass is a different kind of object. Released December 22, 2020, it is a 15-track compilation, and the title points to its purpose. A bhaktimala is a garland of devotion, and this one is offered to Ram Dass, a fellow student of Neem Karoli Baba.

So this is less a career chapter than a gesture of gratitude from within a shared lineage. It is best heard as Krishna Das the devotee, not Krishna Das the bandleader.

Sonic Character

I can't verify the full credits, so treat these as the qualities to listen for in this tradition. Krishna Das's work centers on a warm, worn, unhurried voice that leads a phrase and lets others answer. Kirtan typically builds on repetition. A simple melody returns again and again, and the tempo gradually quickens or the voices thicken. Harmonium and hand percussion are the usual foundations of the form, though you should check the credits for what is actually played here.

The mood is meant to be devotional rather than dramatic. Pacing is patient. The point is not to arrive somewhere but to stay inside a phrase until it stops being words and becomes a feeling. Expect the album to reward you for letting it take its time.

Signature Tracks

The facts available to me don't include a track listing, and I won't guess at titles. Instead, here is how to find the moments that matter on a 15-track garland:

  • The opening track. In a tribute like this, the first piece sets the intention. Listen for how quickly it settles into a groove and whether the voice enters gently or with presence.
  • Any track led by Krishna Das himself. Notice his phrasing: the slight delay before the response, the way he sustains a vowel, how he lets silence sit between repetitions. This is where his teaching lives.
  • The track where the chorus swells. Call-and-response chanting lands hardest when the answering voices grow fuller. Find the point where the room, even a recorded one, seems to join in.
  • The closing track. A garland needs a clasp. Pay attention to whether the album winds down or ends in open stillness.

Check the Spotify listing for the actual sequence and credits, then apply these four lenses.

Its Place in the Tradition

This album sits within bhakti, the devotional path of yoga, where love and surrender are the means rather than technique or philosophy. Kirtan is its musical practice: participatory, repetitive, and aimed at the singer as much as the listener. Krishna Das's bio describes a blend of traditional Indian melodies with Western musical influences, which helped make the practice accessible to people who might never have attended a temple.

The compilation format also echoes a very old devotional habit, gathering offerings for a teacher or friend. The genre tags attached to his work (devotion, meditation, satsang, spiritual teaching) all apply. Satsang means gathering in the company of truth, and a tribute collection feels like exactly that, a communal remembering more than a product.

Who It Lands Hardest For

  • Listeners who knew or followed Ram Dass. The dedication gives the album emotional weight that no description can substitute for.
  • Longtime kirtan and Krishna Das listeners. You'll hear familiar devotional language in a more communal, commemorative setting.
  • People in a season of grief, transition, or quiet. Devotional chant has long been a companion for loss. If you are remembering a teacher, parent, or friend, this is music that makes room for that.
  • Curious newcomers who tolerate repetition. If you're open to a slow-building, meditative format, this can be an inviting way in. If you want variety and hooks every thirty seconds, it may test your patience.

A Close Listening Recommendation

Play it in the evening, after the day's tasks are done, with the lights low and your phone out of reach. Headphones will help you hear breath, vocal texture, and the small decisions inside repetition, but a quiet room with speakers works just as well if you want to sing back.

Don't shuffle. The fifteen tracks are a garland, and the order is part of the offering. Listen once straight through without doing anything else. If you're drawn to it, join the responses quietly, even if you don't know the words. The practice is participatory, and the album makes more sense when you are not only listening.

If you want a ritual frame, light a candle or sit for a few minutes before you press play. Dedicate the listening to someone you are grateful for. That fits the spirit of a bhaktimala: a garland made by many hands for one person, and one that you can add your own thought to.
