Kora Sutra by John De Kadt: A Listening Guide

Kora Sutra is an eight-track album released in 2004, and it arrives from a musician who has long described his work as an act of slowing down. John de Kadt is a musician, poet and storyteller, and the thread running through everything he does is a devotion to returning, even briefly, to the tempo of nature. This album is best heard in that light. It is not a showcase of virtuosity or a bid for momentum. It is an invitation to lower your pulse and pay attention.

Where It Sits in John De Kadt's Arc

By 2004, de Kadt had already spent years telling ancient myths from indigenous cultures and mystical traditions, treating story as ritual and ceremony rather than entertainment. His live practice, which he calls DrumStory, pairs that storytelling with an array of percussive and melodic instruments from across the globe. Kora Sutra can be understood as the musical side of that practice, offered in a form you can carry into a quiet room. Later chapters of his career, including his membership in The Rememberers, a trio weaving myth with original songs, and his creation of the BlessFest sacred arts festival, extend the same impulse outward into community. This album is closer to the solitary root of it all: one musician, a set of instruments, and a stance of remembrance.

Sonic Character

The title points toward the kora, the West African harp-lute whose cascading, rippling lines are among the most meditative sounds in acoustic music. I can't confirm the album's full instrumentation from the facts available, so treat the following as what to listen for rather than a track-by-track inventory. Given de Kadt's known practice with global percussive and melodic instruments, expect an unhurried, hand-played, acoustic palette in which texture matters more than density. Listen for how notes are allowed to decay, how silence is treated as part of the phrase, and how rhythm tends to breathe rather than drive.

The mood is contemplative and ceremonial. Because de Kadt is also a poet and a storyteller, it is worth attending to how any vocal or spoken presence sits in the mix: closer to invocation or telling than to performance. The pacing invites you to settle in rather than be carried along.

Signature Tracks

I'm not going to name specific tracks here. The facts I have confirm that the album has eight of them, but not their titles, and I'd rather not invent them. Instead, here is how to find your own signature moments across the eight:

  • The opening track. Notice how quickly the album establishes its tempo. An opener on a record like this works as a threshold, and the question is how long it takes your breathing to match it.
  • The longest track. In meditative music, length is usually where the real work happens. Look for the point where repetition stops feeling repetitive and starts feeling like a landscape.
  • Any track where voice or spoken word enters. Given de Kadt's storytelling roots, these are likely the places where the album's ceremonial side comes into focus.
  • The closing track. Pay attention to how the album lets you go. The final minutes often reveal the intention of the whole.

If you'd like this guide to name and describe specific pieces, send me the tracklist and I'll revise it.

Place in Its Tradition

Kora Sutra belongs to a broad family of devotional and contemplative music rather than to any single lineage. De Kadt is categorized among musicians, kirtan leaders and speakers, which places him near the call-and-response and devotional-music world, though the album's title and his DrumStory background suggest something more instrumental and story-rooted than strictly congregational chanting. Think of it as sitting at the meeting point of world-instrument meditation music, ceremonial storytelling, and the sacred-arts community that gathers at retreat centers and festivals. Its devotion is less to a single deity than to attentiveness itself, to nature's tempo and to the old stories that carry it.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This album will resonate most with listeners who are already tired of speed: people in transition, in recovery from a hectic season, or looking for a sound that supports rather than competes with reflection. It suits yoga and meditation practitioners, retreat-goers, storytellers, and anyone who finds comfort in handmade acoustic textures. If you come to music for propulsion or hooks, it may feel spare at first. If you come to it for permission to exhale, it will likely feel like a gift.

A Close Listening Recommendation

Hear it in one sitting, front to back, in the evening, with the phone in another room. Use good headphones or a quiet room with decent speakers so the decay of each note and the space between them are audible. Dim the lights, or light a candle if ritual suits you. Resist the urge to skip ahead; the album's eight tracks are best taken as a single arc. Afterward, sit for a minute in the silence. That pause is part of the piece, and it is the tempo of nature de Kadt is pointing you toward.
